Households face hard times as food prices hit the roof (3)

Amidst the unprecedented high exchange rate of the dollar to naira, currency devaluation and inflation threatening the Nigerian economy, housewives admit the situation is getting out of hand. ENCOMIUM Weekly asked some of them how they are coping with the hard times.

BIMPE ADENIRAN

How have you been coping with the recent rise in prices of foodstuff?

God is helping us. Though, it is not easy, we have no choice. God is faithful.

What do you think is responsible for the hike?

It depends on a lot of factors. The general elections, insurgency in the north, they bring a lot of food stuff from the north – tomatoes, potatoes, onions, beans, pepper and so on. Movement of most of these goods must have been affected by insurgency in the north. I also believe some traders are taking advantage of the elections to exploit Nigerians.

How much do you think a family needs to survive in a month?

It depends on the size of the family and their income. For a family of five, N50,000 may be enough for the month. If they are living above average N100,000 to N150,000 would be enough.

TEMITOPE ABIOLA

How have you been coping with the recent rise in prices of foodstuff?

The rise in the cost of food stuff has affected so many families these days. People no longer go for balanced diet but what will go round and satisfy the family.

What do you think is responsible for the hike?

I think the elections may be responsible for this because there is no proper circulation of money in the country.

How much do you think a family needs to survive in a month?

My hubby gives N100,000 for foodstuff for the family.

KEMI ABEGUNDE

How have you been coping with the recent rise in prices of foodstuff?

We are doing our best to put a balance diet on the table. We are trying despite the harsh economy. God is still on our side.

What do you think is responsible for the hike?

May be the elections, rise in exchange of the dollar and greed on the part of traders who want to make too much profit.

How much do you think a family needs to survive in a month?

Averagely N30,000.

DEWUNMI AMODENI

How have you been coping with the recent rise in foodstuff?

God has been faithful because we have to cut down our expenses within the house. Going to the market now is like going to buy gold, everything falls on the increase in the exchange rate of the dollar which is not applicable to all food items.

What do you think is responsible?

Aside the increase in dollar, greed also contributed to it. Even foodstuff that are produced within Nigeria, mallams tell you, “It’s the high dollar rate.” It does not make sense to me.

How much do you think a family needs to survive?

Right now, a family needs between N100,000 and N150,000, depending on the size and what they eat without adding all other unexpected spending likely to crop up.

TIWATOPE OLUJIDE

How have you been coping with the recent rise in foodstuff?

Things have not been easy but we have been coping. The rise in foodstuff is something people did not expect because we already have it at the back of our mind such a thing happens only during festive periods and we would have planned ahead of time.

What do you think is responsible?

I feel the high dollar rates is responsible but on the other hand it is not because it depends on the kind of food items you are purchasing. If you are used to buying household items and foodstuffs such as beverages, canned foods and all other imported products, then you are likely to face the rise in dollar. But buying our own locally made foodstuff like tomatoes, yam flour, vegetables and even meat should not be expensive but because of greed, they have also increased their prices.

How much do you think a family needs to survive?

A family needs about N80,000 to survive monthly.
