How much it costs to make a pot of soup

MOST often, in households, the women of the house prepare assorted soups to go with meals.  Some of these soups are tied to a particular tribe.

In Nigeria, because we are rich in culture, there are different soups and the ingredients vary.

ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with expert soup maker, Mary Ann Ogugua-Verwey, who makes and supplies soups in litres.  She enlightened us on the cost of making soup. 

We also chatted with housewives on how much it costs to make a pot of soup that would last for two days.

 

MARY ANN OGUGUA-VERWEY

How much does it cost to cook a pot of soup for two days?

We have varieties of soup but most of them go for N5,000.  The soup is for a family of five or six people.  It comes in five litres and it is very rich, assorted meat and every other thing is inside.  We give our stew out at the rate of N6,000 for two native chicken.  We have that of N3,000 as well. If we are using frozen chicken, we will use a kilo.

Content of the stew – Stock fish, meat, prawn, ice fish, snail, pepper, etc.

 

MRS. ADEOTI

To cook a pot of stew, you don’t need much.  I cook for myself and my husband.  Our daughter is still young.

To cook chicken stew – Chicken, 2 kilos N1,400; groundnut oil to fry and cook N200; Pepper N500; Seasoning and spices N100; Onions N100; Total N2,300

This can serve two people two times for four days.

For fish stew

Fish, 2 kilos N1,200; groundnut oil to fry N200; Palm oil to cook N200, Pepper N700; seasoning and spices N300; onions N100; Total N2,700

 

MRS. CHRISTOPHER

It depends on the quality of soup.  For an average soup, one will need about N4,000 to N6,000.

Ogbono soup

Ogbono half derica N600; bitter leaf N200; Pepper N100; Black pepper N100; Seasoning N50; Ponmo N500; Dry fish N300; Oporoko N500; Crayfish N200; Meat N3,000 (assorted inclusive); Palm oil N200; Onions N200; Total N5,950

This can feed six people for two days.

 

MRS. MOLOKWU

My best soup is Edikaikong.  If I want to make a pot of soup for two days, I will need to buy Water leaf N300; Ugwu N200; Ponmo N500; Dry fish N500; Crayfish N300; Oporoko N500; Meat N3,000; Palm oil N200; onions N100; Seasoning N50; Pepper N400; Total N5,550

This soup can feed four people for two days.

 

MRS. UBAH`

To cook a pot of soup that will last for two days, I need to know how many people are eating the soup.  Let’s say for a family of five, for Onubu soup, I will need: Bitter leaf N300; Palm kernel N300; Crayfish N300; Dry fish N300; Ponmo N500; Oporoko N500; Cocoyam N300; Uziza leaf N100; Black pepper N100; Hot pepper N200; Achi N100; Seasoning N100; Chicken N1,400, Total N4,500

This soup will feed a family of five for two days.

 

EFON SAMUEL

N5,000 will be enough for a family of five to make Edikaikong soup.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Stock fish, meat, periwinkle, smoked fish, pumpkin leaf (ugwu), pepper, salt, maggi, onions, palm oil.

 

TITILAYO AJENIFUJA

I spend about N1,200 on a pot of soup to last for two days.

For a regular chicken soup, all that is needed is just the chicken, well spiced and boiled.  I always have onions at home and spices.  All I have to buy is chicken and pepper.  A kilo of chicken goes for about N800 and pepper N400.

 

ADETU  OMOBOLANLE

As you know, there are different types of soup, and even at that, the contents of the pot of soup will determine the price.  For example, I could cook a pot of Okro soup for N1,000 and it will last for two days and comfortably feed a family of three like mine.

Okro N200; Crayfish N100; Beef N500; Ponmo N100; Ground pepper N100.

 

BARBARA ANI

It depend on the type of soup, because the ingredients for the soup differs, but I’d say N3,000.

What are the condiments in the soup?

I like my soup with Periwinkle, meat, fish, ponmo, etc.  But if I am on a budget I’ll do just fish and meat.

 

DEBORAH ADEOTI

It costs about N1,500 to make a pot of vegetable soup that would last for two days.

What are the condiments in the soup?

For Efo riro, I always include Ponmo, beef, smoked fish, pepper and crayfish.  Ponmo N100; Beef N800; Smoked fish N200; Pepper N200; Crayfish N100; Locust beans N50.

 

ADE IRAWO

To cook Efo riro, that will last for two days, will cost N2,000 to N2,500.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Efo soko, pepper, locust beans, Ponmo, dry fish, assorted meat and stock fish.

 

BUKOLA BASHORUN

To cook Okazi soup that will last two days will cost N3,000 to N3,500.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Waterleaf, periwinkle, stock fish, scent leaf, pepper, ponmo, gizzard, meat and smoked fish.

 

MRS. OGHAGHA

It can be difficult to determine the exact amount it would cost to cook a pot of soup that will last for two days.  I prepared Ofada sauce some days back for about four of us. I spent roughly N2,000.

Seasoning N100; Pepper N400; Onions N200; Locust beans N100; Beef N100; Ponmo N100; Crayfish N100; Smoked fish N200; Palm oil N100; Total N2,000.

 

AMAKA IKEJI

It depend on the number of people you have in mind.  For an average family, N3,000 will be enough to make Oha soup.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Meat, stock fish, dried fish, Oha, palm oil, cocoyam.  At least N1,500 for meat.

 

SARAH NEGEDU

A pot of Igo-go soup will cost N2,000.  Igo-go soup is made from Beni seed.  It is popular among the Igala people.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Meat, dried fish, crayfish, Beni seed, palm oil, local seasoning (okpehe), fresh pepper, salt.  At least a kilo of meat will be enough.

 

SEUN AKINS

At least N3,000 will be enough to make a pot of soup for four people and it will last for two days. The soup in mind is Egusi.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Egusi (melon), chicken, stock fish, dry fish or prawns, snail, ugwu or water leaf.  Some people will prefer beef to chicken.

 

MRS. DANIEL

It would take N2,500 to make a pot of soup.  Ila alasepo.  It can last for two days for a family of five.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Okro, meat, prawn, snail, salt, pepper, seasoning, oil.  Some people prefer to leave it white, when I say white, it means no groundnut or palm oil.

 

RUGBA ONAMEJERE

It would cost N1,800.

What are the condiments in the soup?

Meat, ugwu, ponmo, egusi and stock fish.
