How the military is reclaiming lost territories from Boko Haram

– Continues exploits amid elections nationwide

The military is clearly undeterred in its efforts to rid the country of Boko Haram jidahists, despite the hotly-contested elections over the weekend.

The last territories under the insurgents’ control are being recovered as normal life returns to reclaimed towns and communities.

All but two major local government areas hitherto controlled by the insurgents have been liberated in the operations, which involved troops from neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

ENCOMIUM Weekly looks at how Boko Haram, at long last, is losing the fight….

Tuesday, March 24, 2015: Troops liberate Pulka, Borno after air and land operations

The Defense Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Tuesday it had liberated the north eastern town of Pulka, Borno State, dislodging Boko Haram militants from the town.

The DHQ twitter handle read on Wednesday, March 25, 2015: “Troops yesterday evening took full control of Pulka, Borno, after a fierce battle with terrorists who have been operating in the town.”

A subsequent tweet read: “Cordon and search have commenced after the air and land operations that overpowered the terrorists. More details later.”

Friday, March 27, 2015: Military retake terrorist stronghold, Gwoza, mop up operations in full swing

Nigerian troops have retaken the town of Gwoza from the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, the military said on Friday.

Boko Haram had, in August last year seized the Borno town, declaring it a caliphate and ruling it by Islamic law. The insurgents were thought to have held some 200 school girls abducted from Chibok almost a year ago in the same town.

Several members of the sect were killed and a mop-up operation was taking place in Gwoza, the army said on its official Twitter account, which read: “Troops this morning captured Gwoza destroying the headquarters of the terrorists self-styled caliphate”.
