‘I am not Weird MC’s lesbian partner’, Goldie cries

HARVEY Oluwabimpe Susan, better known and addressed as Goldie is very bitter at the moment.  And the reason is not unconnected with the rumour making the rounds that she is in a hot romance with one of her colleagues, Sola Idowu, also known as Weird MC.

ENCOMIUM Weekly took Nigeria’s version of Lady Gaga up on this and other issues that revolve around her career and life.

How did you come up with the name Goldie?

My friends in the United Kingdom nicknamed me Goldie because of the colour of my skin and hair. I was born a red head, I like to be known as a ginger albino, bronze skin, bronze hair.  I go very red in scorching sunlight.  When I was young, my mates used to taunt me by calling me, Afin Pupa.  But as I got older, I realized that extreme sunlight wasn’t good for my skin and I stayed away from the sun.  Eventually, in the UK, my skin tone evened because the weather is more temperate there.  I decided to use it as my stage

name because gold is rare, its precious.  Everyone wants a bit of it or a lot of it (laughs) and it is also expensive and can be used to define all good things.  I wanted the brand to stand for all these qualities and more.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am wrapping up work on my album.  Its my debut, so I am very excited about it.

What is the title of the album?

Gold.

How many tracks do you have on it?

16 tracks.

When should we be expecting it?

That would be September 2010.

Why did it take you so long?

An album is something you keep for a long time, even after you are gone, people are going to be listening to your record.  I think its best to take time to make sure that each song is a classic before churning it out.  That’s what I have been doing in Kennis Music Studios in collaboration with our talented producer, Master Kraft.  All I have were singles with videos.

Which label were you with before joining Kennis Music?

I wasn’t with any label, I had a tentative deal with PHI Records in Scotland but for the deal to materialize, I would have to relocate there, but I have no intention of doing that this time.

How does it feel being one of the best female musicians at the moment?

I am flattered, I just thank God for His mercies and inspiration, His grace and the love of my family and fans.  It feels good to be appreciated, so I am grateful.

What do you have to say about the tale making the rounds that Weird MC is your lesbian partner?

I heard the rumour too.  I found it very amusing then very sad.  I appreciate strong women, women who have been through trying times and have pulled through and forged ahead. I look up to such women, in our industry, Weird MC is one of such women.  In a formerly male dominated industry, she managed to carve a niche for herself. I moved close to her because I wanted to tap from it.  I regret that our friendship was trivialized.

Do you do any other thing apart from singing?

Music is a 24 hour business for me, there is little time for anything else these days.

We learnt you live in a mansion and drive nice cars, would you say you got all these from music?

(Laughs) I live with my family and I’m still riding the same car I have been driving three years ago, a silver ML jeep.

Who were you referring to in one of your latest songs entitled, You know it, which you did with Eldee?

I thought Eldee and myself were recording a feel good track meant to inspire confidence. It was a shock to me that some people feel we were referring to some individuals.

Who are these industry haters?

I don’t know o.

Tell us about your background.

I am from Ikole in Ekiti State.  I am the first born of my parents. I attended Greensprings Montessori School and Saint John’s College for my primary and secondary education.  I have a degree in Business Management from the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom.

You are being referred to as Nigeria’s Lady Gaga, why?

Make-up has always been a tool for very good performers, we have people like Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elton John to name a few, and I am not even talking about recent celebrities, these were people we all see as entertainers in the industry.  So, I personally think, makeup is part of a performer’s stage persona. Having said that, I don’t think I use excessive make-up, I use just the right foundation, mascara, blusher and eye shadow, like everybody else.  I think it is because I am light skinned, so everything I put on my face appears flashy.  Secondly, I also think it is the total combination of my attire, my dress sense adds to the whole ‘too much make-up’.  I am flattered at the resemblance of Lady Gaga, I think she’s a famous international icon, a very strong woman. I don’t see myself as Lady Gaga but if that is how people see me, then I am more than grateful to accept the title.  Hopefully, I will sell as many records as she has sold too.

Is it only in your videos you do heavy make-up?

I wear make-up anywhere there are cameras.

What do you have to say about indecent dressing in the industry?

Our bodies are meant as tools of self expression, you dress how you want to be seen or remembered. In my opinion, a woman or man should wear whatever they feel comfortable in and what flatters their body as long as its not inappropriate dressing.  An example of inappropriate dressing would be wearing bikini to the bank.

What are your likes and dislikes?

I like good food, good music and happy people. I dislike liars, unkind people and injustice.

Have you ever been in love?

I have loved, if the definition of being in love is loving someone and the person loving you back, yes, I have been in love.

Do you have a boyfriend?

Yes, I do and I will like to keep the details very private.

How would you describe your kind of man?

Funny, helpful, patient, generous, not too loud, not too reserved either.  Lastly, he must have a very high moral standard.

You are a very fashionable person, what does style mean to you?

I am glad you see me as fashionable, I like to look good.  I try to wear what suits my body.  Style, to me means comfort, elegance and beauty.  For you to be stylish, you have to be comfortable in what you are putting on.  When you are confident, people will see the beauty in you, that’s style.

What fashion item can you not do without?

I love wearing shorts, I don’t have cellulite yet (laughs).  So, I can still wear my shorts. I feel free, unrestricted and sexy in any pair of shorts.

How would you describe the journey so far?

I thank God, it has not been without hurdles but God has given me the grace to endure and overcome all of them.

Describe yourself in one sentence.

I am determined, ambitious, self aware young lady with a very kind heart, who is extremely loyal to her close friends.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

By God’s grace, I want to achieve enough success so as to be able to influence positive changes in our country.

Is it true your song entitled, You Know it was targeted at Omawumi Magbele?

I don’t sing because of people, I don’t have time for that and I have no beef with Omawumi.  My management says I should not talk to anyone about this issue, but I am not fighting with anybody,

Your management says you should not talk about it, so does that confirm you are really fighting with someone?

I am not fighting with anybody.
