‘I never said parents supported my nude pictures,’ Adokiye cries

+ Speaks on her new single, Back up

SEXY singer, Adokiye Kyrian Yvonne, popularly known as Adokiye recently shot a music video for her new single entitled, Back Up.  The video was directed by IK Ogbonna.  Adokiye came into the limelight when semi-nude photos of her surfaced on the internet.  The photo shoot was for a New York magazine and ENCOMIUM Weekly was told she got $200,000 and also a G Wagon Mercedes Benz for it.  ENCOMIUM Weekly met with her at Double Four Restaurant, Shoprite, Lekki, Lagos.  In this exclusive interview, she talked about her career, life and more…

What have you been up to lately?

Music, recording, shooting videos.  Basically, all about music.

Your new song, Back Up, what is it about?

It’s a love song. The video is like a movie meets music.  Very dramatic, it has a storyline everyone would love I’m sure and for me, I like to think that the song, inasmuch as you can dance to it is a party song and also a love song.  It shows that whatever you’re doing, you just got to have a Back Up.  Whatever you’re doing, business, music, relationship, just have a Back Up. Back Up, Back Up One time…Back Up whatever you’re doing.  That’s what it’s about.

When is the video going to be released?

Most likely next week Friday.

Are you planning to release an album?

You know how it is, it’s a process.  I think album thing is like something you should do because something worth doing is worth doing well.  Album is not something you jump into as a new artiste.  You just focus on releasing your singles, making people get used to your sound, your music, love what you’re doing. For now, I’m just working on my singles, coming out with different songs and all that.

Which would you say is your most successful song so far?

Officially, I’m just out with two singles, Love you better and Back Up, that is coming out with the video.  It’s going to be released with the video officially.  When Love you Better came out, people heard it.  But Back Up is not yet out.  So far, so good, they are both successful.

You also did a song with Olamide, was it not released?

It was but it wasn’t like an official project.

Do you even see yourself going into acting?

Yeah, sure…pretty soon.  I’ve done soundtrack for a movie, two movies precisely.  The producer is not out with the movie yet.  You know how it is with the Nigerian movie industry, they won’t tell you the title of the movie till it’s out.  So, I don’t even know the title, I was just called to do it and I did little scenes in the movie, so I know with time you’d get to see much more because I’m working on stuffs like that.  I’m getting calls from producers so by God’s grace, I’ll diversify soon.

Are you also into modeling?

I just do a little bit of this, a little bit of that.  I think an artiste can be a model, an actor can be a model.  It comes with the business.  It comes within the territory, so yeah, somehow.

Do you consider yourself a sex symbol?

(Laughs) Yeah.  Yes, I do.

In a recent interview you said your parents were supportive of your nude pictures?

I didn’t say that.  I said my parents are supportive.  In anything I do, they support me because they know the kind of daughter they have.  I didn’t talk about nude pictures.  I just said my parents support me.  My family supports me, that was what I said.

How was growing up like for you?

I was born in Port Harcourt.  They moved my parents to Abuja, then we travelled to the UK, stayed for sometime, did a little bit of kindergarten there, then came back to Nigeria, stayed for sometime again, travelled back to the USA, came back again. But my high school was here, sophomore then university basically, here in Nigeria.

What school did you go to?

Catholic School, Caritas University, Madonna.  It’s a missionary school owned by a Reverend Father.  I studied Architecture.

How many siblings do you have?

Two boys and a girl.  I’m the only girl, second to the last born.

There was news that you and Super Eagles star, John Ogu are in hot romance, is it true?

You’re asking me about my love life right now.  I don’t want to talk about it, it’s private.

You don’t want to talk about it?

No, because I don’t see how that has anything to do with what we’re talking about.  It’s my love life and I don’t want to talk about it.

How about you and IK Ogbonna?

IK Ogbonna is my close friend.  Very close friend.  We met in Lagos about two years ago.  It started when I did that song with Olamide.  That was when our friendship started.  Sometimes you meet people, sometimes you connect with them, sometimes you don’t connect.  So, it happened that we got close as friends, we connected.  He liked me as a friend, I liked him as a fried and that was it.

Have you gotten closer over the years?

What do you mean closer (laughs).  We are friends and I know friends are close because I’m in a relationship.

But you don’t want to reveal who the lucky man is…

No.  But just know something, I love to love. I respect my relationship a lot.  I don’t play with it.  You know what happens when you put your relationship out there.  Inasmuch as you try so hard to keep it away, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t work.  So, I respect my relationships a lot and I don’t want to talk about it.

What do you find most attractive in a man?

He has to be hard working, God fearing and someone that respects me, that’s it.

Who’s your biggest inspiration in Nigerian music?

I love Onyeka Onwenu, 2Face Idibia, D’Banj.  When they ask me questions like this, I always say that I admire people’s hard work and success and stuff like that because we have lots of good musicians.  They’ve made it, they’ve given us something to look up to.  Like I said, I love Onyeka Onwenu a lot and I admire 2Face Idibia and D’Banj.

Where do you see yourself in the nearest future?

I’m just going to sum it up, I’m going to be a household name majorly.  I’m going to be heard everywhere, cities, countries, everywhere.  Before you become a household name, it means you’re very successful.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I chill with friends, travel with my manager, have fun. I have a manager that is a shopaholic so when I’m not working, she takes me somewhere to shop.

What more should fans expect from you?

I intend to do campus tour after my Back Up video comes out.  Go to universities, cities, towns where you have schools just to get the youths.  Perform for them, sing for them. I intend to do it with friends, artistes as well.  Fans should expect more videos, more songs, different styles, good music, good sound by God’s grace.
