‘I want to teach upcoming musicians some tricks of the game’ – Shina Peters

Sir Shina Peters is embarking on a musical tour which will take the train to three cities, Ibadan, Ijebu-Ode and Lagos from Friday, April 6 till Sunday, April 8, 2012.  Other supporting artists on the tour include 2Face, Banky W, 9ice, MI, Naeto C, Davido, Wizkid, etc.

In an exclusive chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the Afro juju creator opened up on the tour, his regrets and lessons life has taught him.

Can you tell us how it all began?

Thanks to Ostrich Entertainment, they changed the original master-plan. My idea before was to do what upcoming artists would gain from.  I am not saying I am going to die soon, but what I am saying is with all the talents in me, I don’t want to die with it.

I want to share it with upcoming artists, I want them to learn one or two things from me. At the end of the day if God says its time, we would still have a lot of them playing good music.

What do you intend to gain from the Ijebu Ode, Ibadan concert?

Let Shina Peters expose the hip hop artists to the grassroots people.  With all the serious lyrics let’s take all the upcoming artists to the grassroots so they will appreciate them.

You are more of a juju artiste but you have been talking about hip-hop, how do you intend to blend the two?

I don’t even need to say that, it is only the brand of my music that has good followership everywhere.  I am so happy. I don’t have problem with that, I can remember then I always have my sunglasses on, I am the father of swagger.  I also started rap in juju.

What are some of the things you don’t want the younger generation to learn from you?

I started singing at 10.  I bought my first car at 18, built my first bungalow at 16.  My first born at 14.  So, there’s no perfect human being.  As an artist, music is too spiritual.  You have to be close to your God and pray always.  If upcoming artists make mistakes don’t blame them, they are still young.

As a father to all of us, what keeps you looking so young?

I always say this to upcoming artists, don’t go into music because of the flamboyant life, success or money, because there are bridges you have to cross.  If you don’t love what you are doing you wouldn’t be able to cross the bridge.

I love what I am doing so I am not stressed, that’s why I am looking good.  I am happy, I have six grandchildren.  I am very close to God now.  It’s either I am praying or swimming because I really love swimming.

You are more spiritual now, when did that start?

I can’t say when it happened but I can still remember that I was in my sober mode.  I was meditating, so, different things came to my mind. I said to God thank you for keeping me and making me excel.  So, since then I gave my life to God, since then I have been close to God.

What is the relationship with you and Clarion Chukwura?

Clarion is a married woman, I don’t discuss a married woman, I can only discuss Clarence. I feel great to have a son like Clarence.
