Ify Molokwu explains her romance with gospel music

Ify Molokwu is a gospel singer cum businesswoman. The Imo born graduate of English from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ie, Osun state told ENCOMIUM Weekly in this chat on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at ENCOMIUM’s Place, Ogba, Lagos, that she started singing in the choir from childhood, adding that, her mom still sings in the choir and her father loves oldies of veteran musicians like Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, late Fatai Rolling Dollar…

Do you have a ministry?

Yes, I have Ify Molokwu & Her Dynamic Ministry. It’s exclusively gospel music ministry. I don’t do secular music.

DSC_0758How long have you been singing?

I have been doing gospel music since childhood. I started in the church and I do strictly gospel music and it runs in the family.

Do you have a band?

No, I don’t have a band. Whenever I have a show, I call the instrumentalists, we do our thing and disperse.

Do you have an album?

Yes, I have one to be launched on Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Modupe Hall, Ibafo, Ogun state. The title of the album is Restoration, a six tracker.

Any collabo?

Yes, I have done two collabos, one with Seyi Oloyede aka Akobi Eledumare and another with Sola Abbey, a producer.

What do you intend to achieve with gospel music?

My primary assignment as a gospel singer is to minister the Word of God to the world.

But there is a popular opinion that gospel music is not a goldmine, it’s not even lucrative, what’s your take?

I am a businesswoman and a gospel singer. What I make in business will service my music. Like I said, my primary assignment is to touch souls with gospel music, any other thing is an addendum.

Do you play any music instrument?

I don’t. I only sing, but if the instrumentalists are not getting it right, I would know.

Why must I buy your music?

The title says Restoration, everybody needs to be restored – financially, spiritually, health wise, relationship with God, etc. The Bible says God will restore all that the cankerworm, the caterpillar and the palmerworms have eaten. That is the DSC_0756reference point. It’s a life changing exercise we all need. Another track says, Esu o le pa mi layo (The devil can’t beat me to any game).

Who is your role model in your genre of music?

I don’t really have a role model. My inspiration comes from God.

Are you comfortable doing gospel music?

That’s the only thing that gives me joy. Human beings can’t give me the type of joy gospel music gives.

What are the challenges?

There are challenges everywhere. Instrumentalists don’t keep to time, financial assistance is very illusive, the economy is dwindling by the day and insecurity is something else.

Among the big names, which of them would you love to do a collabo with?

Lara George and Patricia King, formerly of the Midnight Crew.
