Ikpeazu, C sing victory song after Abia, Imo guber rerun

FOLLOWING his official declaration as Abia Governor-elect, Dr. Victor Okezie Ikpeazu has assured he would leave Abia better than he met it.

Dr. Ikpeazu spoke in a phone interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly on Sunday, April 26,2015 after he defeated the guber candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti in a supplementary election held in Abia State.

“I give God all the glory. He alone could do this for us. This sweet victory is for all Abians. I promise to make Abia a better place.”

Dr. Ikpeazu, a former Head of Department of Bio-Chemistry, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) scored the highest number of votes in the April 11 and April 25 Abia Governorship election. The PDP candidate polled 264,713 votes while Dr. Alex Otti of APGA got 180,882 votes. According to the result announced by Abia Returning Officer, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba on Sunday, April 26,2015, the guber candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) also got 10, 244 votes, while the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) trailed behind with 4,381 votes at the end of the Saturday’s re-run election in nine local government areas.

Supplementary election was fixed after the state Returning Officer, Professor Ozumba declared the Saturday, April 11 governorship poll in the state inconclusive.

Dr. Ikpeazu was leading with 248,459, while his closest rival Dr. Otti of APGA got 165,407.

In declaring the election inconclusive, INEC reasoned that the margin of lead of Dr. Ikpeazu’s 80,053 votes was lower than 175,537 votes in some nine LGs which were either cancelled or no election held.

The Abia rerun would however, favour the PDP whose victory was boosted even before the collation of results with the low voter turn-out that saw a paltry 20 per cent of voters making it to the polling booths last Saturday, April 25.

Only 31,729 votes were recorded out of the 150,837 PVCs distributed to potential voters.

Meanwhile, APGA’s Dr. Alex Otti has rejected the result of the Abia guber poll. He told journalists in Umuahia, Abia state he would challenge the outcome in court.

Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, until his election as Abia Governor served a Deputy Manager with Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA). The sports enthusiast and grassroots politician has been in active politics for about fifteen years.

He also served as Obingwa Local Government boss over a decade ago.
