‘I’m very passionate about medicine as my profession, and fashion as my passion’ – Akin Faminu, medical student and fashion stylist

When people hear or read about Akin Faminu, the first question that pops up in their mind is, “What is a medical student doing as a fashion blogger and stylist?”

Still others may wonder, “How does a medical student find time to blog about fashion and style people?”

In this chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, he answered these questions and more.

What is a medical student doing as a fashion stylist and blogger, what’s the idea behind that?

The way I see it, there’s a thin line between your passion and your profession. My profession is of course in the medical line, all things fashion is what I’m passionate about.

What drives you as an individual?

As a medical student, the priceless feeling of helping people and as a fashion blogger, creativity and aesthetics generally.

How do you juggle your schedule as a medical student and fashion blogging and styling?

Time management is very important, I try not to waste my time unnecessarily and to always do something productive with the free time I have.

Which are you more passionate about, medicine or fashion? And why?

Like I mentioned, they are two parts of my life that I don’t compare.

What influenced you into fashion blogging?

Before I started my own blog, I’ve been writing articles for other blogs and magazines so that sort of influenced my decision to start mine and also wanting to share my passion with as many people as I can.

How did your growing up influence your choice of career?

I grew up with quite a lot of exposure in the medical line, and I was really good at my science subjects, but at the same time, I liked to explore, I believe in versatility and I guess what I do now is as a result.

After graduation from school, will you practice as a medical doctor or you’ll focus on fashion, and why?

Yes, I intend to practice, and practising doesn’t stop me from doing any other thing. Sure, it’ll take some sacrifice, but it’s not impossible. Nothing great comes easy.

As a fashion stylist, how do you determine what best suits someone?

Understanding your client’s personal style is probably the most important thing, it allows you to make the right choices.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion means more than mere clothing, trends and what not to me. Fashion is an art and it’s a sincere expression of creativity.

What do you think about trends and how much influence should it have on one’s personal style?

I think it’s the other way round, trends shouldn’t affect your personal style. Instead, your personal style should reflect through trends.

Tell us more about Akin Faminu.

I’m a student of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. I’m from a family of five with two siblings, both boys.

I’ve been into fashion for about 2-3 years now, and my vision is to help as many people discover their personal style, and more generally, to tell people to live their passion. It’s not impossible!
