Investigators detect pings in search for AirAsia flight QZ8501 black boxes

Indonesian investigators searching for the crashed AirAsia QZ8501 black boxes yesterday (Thursday, January 8) reported some cheering news when they detected pings in the Java Sea.

The Singapore-bound flight crashed on December 28, claiming the lives of all 162 people on board. It was less than half way
into a two-hour flight from Indonesia’s second-biggest city of Surabaya. The Airbus A320-200 carries the black box cockpit voice and flight data recorders near the tail section.

An investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee, Santoso Sayogo, confirming the news said: “We received an update from the field that the pinger locator already detected pings. We have our fingers crossed it is the black box. Divers need to confirm. Unfortunately it seems it’s off from the tail. But the divers need to confirm the position”.
