Iya Kike 13: ‘She was like a mother to me’ – Rammy Shitta-Bay (governor, ANTP Lagos state)

What role did the deceased play in the industry?

The role of the deceased was a big one. She was like a mother to me and that was what everybody called her. When I first contested for ANTP governorship, around 2001, she stood by me. When I see her, I’m always happy. Her words of encouragement, her advice. Whenever there was an issue or maybe we were writing a story, we would sought her opinion and she would guide us so, we lost a gem, we lost a mother. In fact, we are really sad.

How long have you known her?

It has been a longtime. At least, it should be about 30 years now.

When last did you see her?

Let me just talk about how she died, you will know when last I saw her. Iya Kike was the first person who would always call on every January. She would call and pray for me and this year, I was expecting her to call as usual. I didn’t sleep overnight. I had a party on that day. It was at that party that I mentioned that Iya Kike had not called me today. The person now said, “Which Iya Kike are you talking about?”. “Somebody that they’ve taken to the hospital”. I picked my phone immediately and called her, it was Kike that picked my call and she said Iya Kike was critically ill and hospitalized. I asked what happened to mama? Because that’s what we always called her. So, I told her I would check on her the following day which is Monday. But it was quite unfortunate that she died the following day, which was a Monday.

What would you miss about her?

We will miss all these things that I have said about her. Her advice and everything.
