Jimmy Jatt, My Lagos, ‘The rowdiness of Lagos has become part of me’

Considered as the greatest DJ in Nigeria, DJ Jimmy Jatt has grown so accustomed to the rowdiness of Lagos that that’s what he misses most when he’s out of town.

Where do you live and why?

Currently, I stay in Surulere. It’s the most central location for my profession. Either Ikeja or Victoria Island, it’s closer for me.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the Island. I lived in Obalende for a while and I schooled in Ikoyi.

Where do you shop?

I don’t do much shopping but when I do, I have shops on Adeniran Ogunsanya and Ogunlana (both in Surulere) that I patronize.

What’s your earliest Lagos memory?

Growing up in Obalende was so much fun. The Fanti carnivals, Eyo festival and all that.

What do you miss most when you’re out?

The rowdiness. It’s part of me already. That’s what I miss most anytime I travel.

What do you hate most about Lagos?

The lawlessness! I hate the lawlessness and the fact that Lagos is very dirty. But if not for that, Lagos can pass for one of the best cities in the world.

What do you like most about Lagos?

Everything. Lagos is where you come out of your house and you’ll find something to do. Either work or play or all, if you look well, you’ll find something to do.

What part of Lagos do you like most?

Lagos Island. I can’t walk 10 metres without finding someone that’s my friend. Then there’s this security on the Island. It’s like home for me.

What’s your favourite Lagos hangout or club?

That’ll be Club Towers. That’s the best club in Lagos as far as I’m concerned. It’s the most classy and in terms of music, they’ve got the best. In every aspect, Club Towers comes first.

What are your extravagances?

It used to be clothes. I could spend any amount on clothes. You’ll see something on me that look like a rag but when I tell you the price you’ll be shocked. But now, I am a family man so I’ve reduced in that aspect. Right now, electronic gadgets are what I lavish money on. The last equipment I bough is a technique DZ1200.

How do you move around Lagos?

I drive around. I’ve always had cars at my disposal. It makes sense for me to drive because you call a cab and he charges an outrageous amount. So, why not use the money to fuel my car and move.

How do you relax?

Right now, I’m on my sofa with my legs on the table, watching TV. Basically, that’s how I relax.

What new projects are you working on?

Right now, I am concentrating more on being a very good DJ. I want to work harder at being a better DJ. I don’t want distractions.
