Lagos State Government is set to demolish 114 distressed buildings in the metropolis. Starting from Monday, August 28, 2017, 57 of such buildings would be reduced to rumbles.
The demolition which is being undertaken by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) commenced in Lagos Island where 34 buildings have been earmarked for demolition.
According to the General Manager of (LASBCA), Engr Lekan Sodehinde, the demolition exercise was under the first phase of distressed buildings approved by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode .
He said the buildings had been distressed overtime and that government had served owners of the structures notice.
He stated the exercise was being carried out to stem tides of of collapsed buildings in the state, that government would not fold its arms and allow buildings to collapse indiscriminately across the metropolis.
The first phase which started on Monday will last for two weeks by which 57 distressed buildings would have been demolished.
The remaining 57 would have their days in the second phase of the exercise.
He said government is tired of waiting for the owners of such buildings to remove them on their own.
He went further to explain that once a distressed building had been demolished by the government, the owner would be given 90 days to pay the demolition cost. If he or she fails to do so, the land would be seized by the government.
