Lagos conducts seminar on ease of doing business initiative

As part of the initiatives to revitalise the Civil Service, the Lagos State Government has organised a two-day sensitisation programme for Public Servants in the State to imbue in them the culture necessary to promote and enhance the Ease of Doing Business Initiative in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Speaking during the programme organised for Directors and Accounting Officers of MDAs at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium Alausa, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olabowale Ademola, assured Public Servants of the commitment of the current administration to the initiative and emphasised the need for officers to key into the vision and ensure its successful implementation.

According to her, Governor Ambode has demonstrated total commitment to restructuring and realigning governance structures to include the comprehensive review of processes and procedures for conducting government business so as to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the State

She said given the status of Lagos State as an emerging Smart City, commercial nerve- centre of Nigeria and the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment, the government has realized that its long-term goals will only be achieved through quality service delivery, infrastructure renewal and creation of an enabling environment for easy and smooth transaction of business.

In his remarks, the Director-General, Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation, Mr. Toba Otusanya said over the past six months, the Lagos State Government had worked in collaboration with the Federal Government through the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) to look at various ways of improving the business terrain in Nigeria.

He stated further that the immediate priority of the Federal Government with the support of State Governments, particularly Lagos and Kano States, was to improve the country’s position from 169 out of 198 countries, by at least 20 places at the next World Bank ranking exercise.

Otusanya explained that under the Ease of Doing Business initiative, the State Governments are responsible for dealing with Construction Permits and Registration of Property, adding that the synergy between the Federal and State governments is imperative for success in this regard.

According to him, several reforms have taken place in Lagos which are expected to impact positively on the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria; hence, the objective of the interactive session was also to showcase some of the key reforms, especially in the areas of Construction Permit; Registering Property; and the Citizens’ Gate, an independent feedback mechanism put in place to track enquiries, complaints, suggestions and commendation on all services provided by the State.

During the programme, the Office of Transformation also showcased the Lagos State Citizens’ Gate Platform – an electronic portal designed to assist citizens to provide feedback on all government services.

The interactive session afforded other key stakeholders, such as the Lands Bureau, Physical Planning and Urban Development, to make presentations on key reforms in their agencies and also respond to inquiries from public servants present at the event.
