Management Of Unilag Postpones Fumigation of Hostels For Bed Bugs

-We will do it before next session

Some months ago, students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, shut down academic activities due to a protest against invasion of bed bugs and mosquitoes of their hostels.

It was alleged that the Student Union Government (SUG) had written a letter to the school management about the issue, but they didn’t do anything about it nor responded to the letter.

This led to protest, and the students barricading the two gates that lead to the school. Meanwhile, the university management had denied that there were bed bugs in the hostels and later promised to fumigate all hostels before exams which commenced on Monday, October 12, 2015.

On Monday, November 2, 2015, ENCOMIUM Weekly called the SUG Secretary General, Babafemi Olafemi to confirm if the school authorities have finally fumigated the hostels as promised.

He said, “We had another meeting and the exercise had been rescheduled. The fumigation can’t be done now because exams are ongoing, but they have promised to do it when the students are on holiday. So for now, we have appealed to the students to do individual fumigation pending when the general fumigation would be done next session. That is the holiday before the next session. By then, the mattresses would also be replaced.

“I think it’s a very reasonable idea. The person that will supply the mattress has been contacted and we will make sure the fumigation will take place and other necessary things will also be replaced.”
