Mayowa Ahmed’s diary : the sweet to sour tale of her last days

In the last days of July and early hours of August, the stage 4 ovarian cancer patient, Mayowa Shukurat Ahmed, brought out the giving spirit in Nigerians with her fund raising campaign netting over N85 million. The feat, a fairytale, enlivened the atmosphere and brought prayers and hope in the bosoms of people of goodwill who wanted her recovery in good time.

Her initial plan was to seek treatment in United States of America, but she eventually opted for South Africa where she passed on in the early hours of Sunday, August 21, 2016.

The diary of her last days contains sweet and sour episodes which have broken the hearts of many.

Here are the sequence of events in the dying days of the 31 year old University of Lagos graduate :

Saturday, July 23

She had created a gofundme account, appealing for $100,000 to seek medical care at Emory International Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia ( United States of America).

Monday, July 25

Over $100,852 was raised within days.  The fund raising was boosted by Aramide Kasumu who initiated an appeal fund and moved Mayowa back to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Surulere, and star actress Toyin Aimakha who used her popularity by asking fans and friends to donate.

The #SaveMayowa campaign became a huge success.

Wednesday, July 27

Mayowa was to be ferried abroad, but many issues prevented the trip.

Thursday, July 28

Tales that the campaign fund for Mayowa was a scam quickly spread afield with claims that her case was hopeless. That her family members were taking advantage of her after doctors at LUTH had informed them that at stage 4, the cancer was beyond treatment.

Toyin Aimakhu visited LUTH, and policemen maintaining peace were already there. There was so much hoopla on the Internet with many concluding that the campaign was a scam.

Friday, July 29

Aramide Kasumu of Lifestake Foundation and Toyin Aimakhu officially lent their voices to the scam tale. From allegations of intention to move her to Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island to fake medical reports, lack of visa and Dubai trip, the scenario got messier.

At this point, it was revealed that over N85 million had been raised.

Police waded in and invited some of the parties, including her family members. The family insisted that the campaign was not a scam, that Mayowa would be flown to ABU Dhabi.

Meanwhile, LUTH dissociated itself from the #SaveMayowa campaign. They wrote that Mayowa, 31, was an old patient who came  again on Monday, July 25, with some medical reports their doctors were examining. That the hoopla had prevented their doctors from conducting any examination. They denied referring her overseas.

Saturday, July 29

The police took over the case, assuring all parties and Nigerians of equity and justice.

Wednesday , August 10

Mayowa was taken to South Africa for treatment.

Thursday , August 11

The Lagos Police Command revealed that the campaign was no scam, and a total of N81 million and $100,000 was raised by Nigerians home and abroad.

Sunday, August 21

News of Mayowa’s death in the early hours of Sunday, August 21, floated to Nigeria.
