MBGN 2015 (4): ‘I am happy I came this far’ -Debbie Collins,  First Runner-up

How does it feel emerging the first runner up?

It feels great to have been acknowledged. I am happy I came this far. When I got to the first 15, I was shocked. Though I tried to do all that was expected of me, there were so many other beautiful girls and they did well too. Then, when I made top five, I was just saying, thank you Jesus. I am really happy.

What went through your mind when you were called as the first runner up?

I was blank for a minute or two. Then, I started feeling so happy. The feeling cannot be described.

Can you share your camp experience with us?

This is my first time of doing something like this. Being in camp with 36 girls was tough. They were all beautiful, they were aiming at winning the same prize. But, I was brought up to accommodate people and work with them. I was taught how to adjust to my environment. It was easy for me to be friendly. I guess that was why I won Miss Charismatic. The first thing that comes to my mind is, be nice. Smile, be helpful.

That was how I went through camp. I was able to make a lot of friends as well.

What do you think you didn’t do right?

I don’t think I did anything wrong. I did all I could. I think there was nothing more that I could do. Everything was in the Hands of God. He gave me what was best for me.

Among all contestants was any a threat to you?

I never saw any one as a threat. I saw all of them as friends. I didn’t see anyone as competition. They were people I wanted to know. We were all working together to achieve a common goal.

Were you into modelling before MBGN?

I modelled for a while when I was in the university. I stopped because I wanted to focus on my studies.

What were you doing before MBGN?

I am done with school. I am currently out of job because, I left work to volunteer for a medical service.

Who got you the MBGN form?

My sister did. She has been telling me to put in for the pageant for three years now but, I always said no. This year, she insisted I should take the form since I was through with school. I just took the form to please her. So that she would stop being on my neck. She is my elder sister, we are only a year apart. She is also my best friend.

I couldn’t hold back the joy when I won. I had to tell her and thank her for it. If there was any one who pushed me into the position I am today, it was my sister.

What pet project do you have in mind to work on?

I will work with children. That was what I was doing in South Africa. I want to work with children in Nigeria.

Tell us about your background?

My family moved to South Africa when I was 13. I had part of my schooling in Nigeria and South Africa. I studied Business and Information System in Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. My parents are both pastors. I came from a family of six, we are four children, three girls and a boy.
