Hundreds of locals have delightfully flocked to a ‘miracle’ lake which appeared in the middle of the desert.
Shepherds stumbled across the mysterious body of water – known as Gafsa beach – three weeks ago, and has provided respite for the people from the scorching heat.
The locals have defied experts’ warnings, who suspect that seismic activity may have ruptured the rock above the water, sending it to the surface, and that the water may be contaminated or even radioactive.
The Gafsa region of central Tunisia is home to the country’s mining industry and phosphate was first discovered in 1886, and can have temperatures up to 40C.
