Mixed reactions trail LASU fees reversal

Mixed reactions have continued to trail Governor Fashola’s reduction of the fees of Lagos State University, while some students applaud the move others insisted the gesture is to paint his administration and that of his party APC in good light ahead the general elections in 2015.

The governor after several protests by LASU students against tuition increment announced during the LASU 19th convocation a reduction of school fees to the old regime of N25,000. Recall in 2011, the Governor Fashola-led administration increased the fees being paid at the school from N25,000 to N198,000 for Humanities and Education faculties while medical students are to pay N350,000, a development which has seen some students withdraw from school due to their inability to afford the high fees. The agitation for a reversal led to the shutting down of the institution in January 24, 2014. Reactions from students of the institution are presented below…

FOLUKE RAHMAN

I am glad about the reduction but I know it’s all because of the coming elections.

BUKKY ADEYEMI

Concerning, the reduction: No attitude at all. I don’t even like the reduction. Every Tom, Dick and Harry will come back.

RASHEED MOHAMMED

What I want the state to do is repair and maintain the roads and buildings, faculty toilets, hostel, etc.

ADEDOYIN FAGBOHUN

The hike in school fees caused the crisis. And now, it has been addressed, it’s a positive development to the school.

ADEFUNKE ALE

I am an ex-student of LASU and I paid 25,000 throughout my studying in LASU. I was in my final year when the fee was increased, then the SUG addressed the students and they started rioting.

Now that there is a reduction back to 25,000 from 100,000 plus, I’m happy about it at least those who are not buoyant to send their children to a private university will be able to afford it.

AFOLABI SEGUN

Because he knows that election is at hand, and PDP will sweep his feet off ground with his wicked handling of poor men since he became governor. Well people have known what you really have in mind, that after electing your present APC governor then you will increase it back.

ONOFIOK DIVINE

Good one, but in my candid opinion, university education should not be too cheap. The indigent but exceptional students should be availed scholarship where they could not cope with huge tuition fees, while children of the rich should make up the financial gaps to sustain the needed infrastructure in the college.
