Mixed reactions trail lift on Post- UTME ban by FG

The self-conducted examination done by tertiary institutions to screen prospective students (Post-UTME) which was scrapped last year has been restored by the federal government. Meanwhile, mixed reactions have trailed the lift on the ban. While some welcomed the development, others condemned it.

ENCOMIUM Weekly brings you reactions from Nigerians…

I think it’s a good one because most times students go to write JAMB, they go to the special centres where they are given answers to pass. But when their choice of universities test their IQ, they will know who and who to give admission. It’s a good move.

What’s the advantage? I don’t think it is necessary. It’s just like doubting the competence of JAMB and WAEC , making them seem irrelevant. Allowing schools to conduct Post-UTME will only allow them to manipulate their lists. There are students that are qualified for admission but the School will deny them on the basis that they didn’t pass post-JAMB. A student’s ability can be tested with the first semester examination. I will only implore JAMB to be strict, I do not see the need for Post-UTME. They are making the process cumbersome.

I think it’s not necessary. I see it as waste of money and resources. If a candidates passes JAMB, he should be allowed to go instead of going ahead to obtain another form. For instance, if a prospective medicine student passes JAMB scoring 200 and above. And he goes ahead with the Post-UTME and scores 50+ , he might be given another course to study which is very wrong. Post-UTME should be scrapped, it’s not needed.

I think it’s a good one from the Federal Government. I mean, Post-UTME should be allowed to stay. JAMB questions are general, but each school knows what kind of students it can admit and this can only be achieved through the self-conducted Post-UTME. Schools should be allowed to do it.

Ogunnaike Alfred

From time, I do not support Post-UTME, I don’t know why the Federal Government had to make a U-turn again. I see it as a way of extorting candidate. I have a cousin who did Unilorin post-utme about 4 years ago alongside her friends, she scored the highest mark in that group but she was denied admission. She scored 64, one of her friends scored 54. Her friend was admitted but she wasn’t. The only reason for that was because the other girl has connection. So, what’s the essence of it if credible candidates can still be denied admission.

Bolade Azeez

Post-UTME is wasteful and unnecessary. It doesn’t justify a student’s admission. The lift on the ban should be reviewed, I don’t think students need it. Let Post-UTME scrapped once and for all.

Okezie God’spower

I support the move, Post-UTME should be restored. I think it is helpful to the school to select their candidates. It also helps the students to study harder for admission. It’s a good move but schools should be urged to beat down the cost. They should stop extorting students.

Akinpelu Eyitayo

The Federal Government is only assisting tertiary institutions in defrauding innocent people. The years when there was no Post-UTME produced qualified graduates. The exam has not helped in anyway, I don’t see the reason why it should return. We don’t want it.

Olanrewaju Sunday

The Federal Government should give detailed reason for Post-UTME. If a student fails JAMB, he should try again later. Why would someone pass JAMB and be denied admission mainly because he couldn’t meet a cut-off mark in Post-UTME? It’s too bad, Federal Government should revisit this issue.

Thomas Agnes

It’s a welcomed development, I applaud it. The Institutions have the right to screen their candidates to pick those who match their taste. This is education we are talking about, we can’t afford to settle for less. It’s a good move from Federal Government.
