Mixed reactions trail proposed nationwide ban on okada

Mixed reactions have greeted the proposed ban on okada by the Federal Government. Some Nigerians ENCOMIUM Weekly sought their views on this also had divergent views on the proposal.

‘IT IS A GOOD MOVE TO MINIMIZE ACCIDENT’ – Bola Ademola
It is a good move to minimize accident, but it will affect the masses. I believe they can still operate faster within the neighbourhood.

‘IT IS A GREAT DECISION, CONSIDERING THE RECKLESSNESS OF OKADA OPERATORS’ – Biola Olabimpe
It is a great decision, considering the recklessness of okada operators. They can still operate within their neighbourhood and earn a living, accident will also be minimal.

‘GOVERNMENT SHOULD REHABILITATE ALL THE ROADS’ – Funsho Amodeni
The proposed ban on okada by the Federal Government is absurd in the sense that not all routes will cars, be able to ply. But if to a large extent it comes to that, then the government should rehabilitate all the roads.

‘I THINK OKADA SHOULDN’T BE BANNED’ – Niyi Akande
I think okada shouldn’t be banned, the Federal Government should license every okada because many people board bike when they are very tired, and others use it to feed their families.

‘TAKING OKADA OFF THE ROAD WILL MEAN TAKING JOBS FROM MILLIONS OF NIGERIANS’ – Banke Adewunmi
I don’t think it is a good idea. However, I read in the newspapers that the Federal Government did not mean it. Taking okada off the roads will mean taking jobs from millions of Nigerians.

‘MANY FAMILIES ARE FED BY OKADA OPERATORS’ – Kehinde Somefun
It is not a good idea, many families are fed by okada operators.

‘OKADA SHOULD BE BANNED ONLY ON THE EXPRESS ROADS’ – Favour Emem
There is nothing wrong in the outright ban of okada nationwide but the issue is that it may increase crime rate in the country because a lot of people will be jobless. I think it should be restricted not banned. Okada should be banned on the express roads and high ways to minimize accident, not in all roads.

‘I DON’T SUPPORT TOTAL BAN OF OKADA’ – Mrs. Kudirat Bello
I don’t support total ban of okada nationwide as being proposed by the Federal Government. But I am not against restriction to some areas just as it is, right now in Lagos. The truth is that, even in Lagos state, the partial ban is affecting movement of people, let alone outright ban.

‘THE BAN IS ILLOGICAL’ – Babatunde Akinloye
There’s no logic in the proposed ban of okada, especially when there is no better alternative for the masses. I don’t also see any reason, states should not determine their mode of transport since the sector is in the concurrent list.
I think the Federal Government should be a regulator of the aviation and railways while the states take charge of road transport.

‘I SUPPORT THE BAN OF OKADA’ – Festus Anyanwu
Yes, I support the proposed ban of okada. The Federal Government, in conjunction with the state and local governments evolve a mass transit programme for easy, efficient and accident-free commuting. I say no to commercial motorcycles.

‘IT WILL WORSEN THE COUNTRY’S POVERTY LEVEL’ – Kehinde Somefun
It’s not a good idea. Outright ban of okada operation will only worsen the country’s poverty level. A lot of people depend on that as a means of livelihood. And if they are stopped, what will they fall back on.
I think they only need to be restricted to certain areas inorder to reduce accident in the country.

‘I DON’T THINK IT’S A GOOD IDEA’ – Wale Ariyo
I don’t think it’s a good idea. Anyway, I don’t think the Federal Government is serious about it because I have read in one of the dailies that the government’s position on that was misinterpreted. That had better be because banning okada means taking jobs from millions of Nigerians.
And this will automatically increase the unemployment rate the nation is battling at the moment.

‘I DON’T THINK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS SERIOUS ABOUT IT’ – Isaac Adegbenjo
I don’t think the Federal Government is serious about it. The situation in Lagos can’t be compared to what obtains elsewhere in the country, even the Federal capital territory, Abuja. I don’t believe the national assembly will welcome the proposal if it’s tabled before it.
The proper thing is to give the okada riders proper orientation concerning the dangers in plying the express roads and high ways, especially in the major towns and cities nationwide; instead of the ban.

‘GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO SOMETHING SERIOUS ABOUT IT’ – Babalola Mike
The proposed ban on okada by the federal Government is not a welcome idea at all because the government that wants to ban some people from what brings in money for them has no alternative replacement for them. So, how will they be taking care of their families?
Don’t be surprised that there are graduates among these okada riders. A lot of people took to the trade because they didn’t have a choice. Government should do something serious to address unemployment first before doing that.
