‘Most of us now work back to back to make ends meet’, Antar Laniyan cries

Renowned actor cum movie director, Antar Laniyan has broken his silence on the dwindling situation of the Nigerian movie industry due to the country’s economic situation. He called on the government to act fast to save the industry from total collapse.
Speaking with encomium.ng on Sunday, April 9, 2017, the Osogbo, Osun born film maker expressed total discomfort about the situation in the creative business which hitherto was very lucrative and dependable, even with little efforts and resources put together.
“Now, let me tell you the truth, things are so tough. The industry is not what it used to be. Now, you have to shoot back to back for you to survive. As we speak, I am on movie location, and I just finished one. Even, after this, I am still going to another location. Most of us work everyday now to survive because we don’t have a choice.
“It’s obvious that the industry is not what it used to be. Unlike before when we used to be too choosy, we don’t do that any more. The situation in the country doesn’t encourage that at all. What we all fight for now is survival. We just have to make ends meet, not that we’re really making it now.
“Other thing is that many people don’t like buying movies again if at all you struggle to produce a standard one. They watch most movies online. And left to me, I still prefer churning out the movies on CDs because it makes more sense business wise than leaving them online.”
On the way forward, Laniyan said, “We have always said it, we need government’s presence in the industry in terms of funding and fighting piracy. These are the major problems confronting the industry.”
