Rita Dominic has spent 17 years in the industry.  How will you describe the journey so far?

It is a blessing to still be here at this point in my career.  Getting juicy roles is just a blessing.  It is not my doing, it has been God.

What will you attribute your 17 years staying power to?

It is God first.  Sometimes, you might have all the plans for the success of your career.  How you want it to turn out, but at the end of the day, it might not work out.  So, it has been God.  Also, in every business you find yourself, you have to keep rebranding.  With the help of my manager, I have been rebranding. I am selective of the kind of work I get involved in.  What is most important as an actor is the kind of work you take, the kind of character you get involved in.  When you do that, you will have good works and your fans will want more of you.

Will you say you are fulfilled with the level of your success as an actress?

I am very happy where I am but I still have a long way to go.

Can you tell us the major project you are happy about?

I have a soft spot for most of the roles I have interpreted but some make me really happy.  The Meeting, Scattered, All my life, that I did with Omotola and Zack Orji many years ago.  There are some projects that are not yet out.  For example, 76.  We shot it in Ibadan.  We were there for about six months and it is still not yet out, I look forward to it.  I have a new project we will commence work on in a couple of weeks.

Can you tell us about it?

The title of the movie is Mary from the stable of Mercury Dream Point Blank Production Limited.  It is a Christian film.  I was sent the script through my manager.  I read it and I liked it.  So, I accepted to be part of it.

Why a Christian movie?  This should be the first time Rita will be playing a role in a Christian movie?

Yes, that is true.  But it doesn’t matter, we have to tell our story.  It is something fresh, something I have never done before.  I will be playing a new character.  I know it will be challenging, it is the kind of role I look for, roles that will stretch me as an actor.  We are starting work first week of April.  We will be shooting for 15 days.

As an actor, what is important is the story.  I read the script and I like the storyline.  I have also been talking with the director, he seems to have a good team.  So, I am hoping it will come out well.

It seems as you grow in the industry, you are avoiding certain roles?

I have been doing this for 17 years.  I think you get to a point in your career when you become selective of the works you do.  You feel you are at a point where you can control the work you put out there.  As you grow old in the industry, you also try to stretch yourself more.

How juicy is the financial reward?

It is juicy enough to be accepted.

What do you like about being a celebrity?

Maybe ordinarily, certain places I wouldn’t be able to enter, my face helps me get there.

Is there anything you don’t like about being a celebrity?

Privacy, oh my God.  Being out there, you can hardly keep your privacy.  So, any little opportunity I get, I guard it jealously.

Do you have a role model in the industry?

I have women I admire and look up to – Joke Silva, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Bukky Ajayi.  My production company is named after Joke Silva.  She inspires me and has continued to inspire me.

What more should we expect from your production company?

We have three projects this year.  We are starting one very soon.  I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag yet.

What is your relationship with other star actresses like Omotola, Genevieve, Kate Henshaw, Monalisa Chinda, etc?

I am cool with everyone.  Genevieve has been close to me for a couple of years now. I respect Omotola as a colleague.  I used to be close with Monalisa.  We get along now.  We are fine.  I am also fine with Kate Henshaw too.

Are you working with any of the star actresses in any of your upcoming projects?

(Smiles) I don’t want to divulge that.

As an actress, what has been your biggest challenge so far?

When we were producing The Meeting, I had never done anything like that before.  I have never played any role as complex as that.  I was producing and acting at the same time. It was very tough.  I didn’t think I could do it.  I was able to do it because of the encouragement I got from my business partner and manager.  Then, having to keep on shooting after losing my dad, it was a tough moment for me, filled with emotions.
