‘My late mom warned me about the dangers of divorce,’ says actress TOYIN ADEWALE

ACTRESS Toyin Adewale was bereaved late last year.  Her mother, Chief (Mrs). Sabina Adedoja Odubonojo, 94, went to be with the Lord after a brief illness. She will be buried in a couple of weeks.

ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with Toyin Adewale on the life and times of her mom, her career and marriage.

Accept out condolence on the demise of your mother.

Thank you very much.

How did it happen?

She died late last year.  I was not around when it happened. I travelled. I was told she went into coma for a day, she came back after some days.  She went into coma again, then she passed on.

What was the nature of her sickness?

She wasn’t sick, just this age related ailment, nothing serious. Before I travelled, she complained that she wasn’t feeling too fine.  She was even crying.  We prayed and said she should go for treatment.

How old was she?

94.

When last did you see her and what did you discuss with her?

She lived with me.  She had been staying with us for 17 years. I had a baby about 18 years ago, she came to see us and was staying with us since then.  I saw her last before I travelled. I told her that I was travelling, she gave me her blessings and I left.

Screen-Shot-2014-10-29-at-8.11.37-AMCan you recall some of the advise she gave you?

Anytime I had challenges with my marriage and I told her, she used to advise me to stay put in my matrimonial home. She once said that she would wake up from her grave and drive me back to my matrimonial home if I attempt to leave my marriage.

Who is left to mourn her?

I am the only one. I am her only child.  Her husband died some couple of years ago.

What about the burial plans?

She will be buried this month.  A Service of Songs will take place on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.  Wake keep will be on Thursday, January 29, 2015.  She will be buried at Atan Cemetery on Friday, January 30, 2015.

What is happening to you career wise?

I am taking things easy now with my acting career. I want to face my catering job squarely.  I also have a movie I am working on, we will hit location in March by God’s grace.

You have been married for 22 years, what has kept your marriage till now?

I always tell people that it is God that keeps marriage.  I also have an understanding husband and children. I also trust my husband.

How do you cope with the nature of your husband’s job knowing well that he works with a lot of actresses?

Like I said, I trust my husband.  Definitely, there will be temptation but God has been giving him the grace to get over them.  Most times he would come home to gist me about everything that happened on location.

What advice do you have for young artistes out there?

It is the woman that can make her marriage work. She needs to be determined. I made up my mind that my marriage will work and God has been seeing me through.  You have to be prayerful and trust your husband too.
