Nigeria at 54: Amosun Charges Leaders on Selfless Service

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has charged leaders at all levels to render selfless service in order to take the country to enviable height.
He also called for the re-structuring of federal structure which would enable the constituent units develop at their own pace and bring total development to the country.
Governor Amosun, who gave this charge at the 54th Independence Celebration at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta said that leaders should take the blame for the state of the nation and remain accountable to the masses.
He said that all hands must be on deck to see that Nigeria becomes a country to reckon with among the comity of nations, saying that “it is not that we do not have the will and zeal to make our country great but we lack the capacity to do the right things at all times.”
The state’s helmsman, who stated that the Independence anniversary evoked mixed feelings in many Nigerians, said there was cause to celebrate as well as ponder over past events, noting that, the nation’s newly advertised growth has not reflected in the standard of living of the Per Capita Income of an average Nigerian.
“We are faced with the toughest challenge we have ever had as a nation aside the civil war,” he said,  pointing out that Nigeria is still faced with the menace of Boko Haram insurgency, which has claimed many lives and the adoption of school girls for over five months.
“This is another time that we need to examine our present federal structure. I believe that our country would develop better if the constituent units are allowed to develop at their own pace.
“Nigeria’s hope to become one of the 20 best economies in the world is realistic and achievable for the fact that it is already one of the 10 fastest growing economies and the fastest in Africa.
“The truth is that this newly advertised growth has not truly reflected in the standard of living of per capita income of the average Nigerian. A growing economy should be able to provide for the growth of not just the public sector and big industries but also the Micro Small Medium scale Enterprises (MSMEs) which will go a long way in boosting the provision of job opportunities, food security and stemming criminal tendencies.
“We as leaders should take blame as we march on as a nation. We as leaders should do the right thing that will take Nigeria to enviable height. We, leaders and people at the helms of affairs, must continue to render selfless service.
We must remain accountable to the masses and collectively, everyone must be a key player in the socio-economic development of our nation,” the governor said.
While emphasizing the need to eschew acts of violence during the forthcoming 2015 general elections, Amosun advised all and sundry to eschew violence and embrace peaceful conduct.
“This will strengthen democracy and ensure that genuine representatives of the people emerge winners”, he said while also re-affirming the unwavering commitment of his administration to the execution of its five cardinal programmes which has made the state a reference point.
