Nigerians applaud the use of ATM

The Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a self-service machine that dispenses cash and performs some human teller functions like balance enquiry, bill payments, mini statement amongst others. The use of ATM in Nigeria has grown rapidly. ATM was introduced into the banking system to solve the problem associated with late night or off banking withdrawal of money.

In 1989, ATM was introduced to Nigeria by the defunct Societe Generale Bank. Since then, ATM appears to have spread across the country. Then banking industry, no doubt has witnessed advancement in technology just like any other sector.

ATM usage in Nigeria has increased far above other countries. In view of this ENCOMIUM Weekly visited some ATM spots and asked people why they prefer using the ATM. Here are their views…

OPEYEMI AREGBE

It is faster and easier. The charges are quite much but I am used to it. The ATM is better than going into the banking hall to queue for a long period.

MISS ADEOLA ASHADE

There is nothing we can do about it than to use it. Only those who want to withdraw above N100,000 can use the counter but withdrawal below that will make you use the ATM. What else do you expect me to use, if I want to withdraw N5,000. They left us with no option.

KOLA GBADEBO

I prefer the ATM to using the counter because it reduces the stress of queuing and it is faster.

MRS. LILIAN WILLIAMS

The ATM is better because it enables you to withdraw money wherever you are without the stress of going to your bank.

MRS. TINUADE COKER

The ATM is better than going into the bank to queue. It is faster and easy to access. I can withdraw anytime and anywhere.

LAWRENCE CHIDI

The ATM is very convenient but let them try to introduce withdrawal above N100,000 to the ATM sector of banking. If I need N110,000, I have to go inside the bank to withdraw.

MISS SHARON OMOLE

It saves stress a lot. It is easier, faster, convenient to operate.

DESMOND

Though, the ATM has its shortcomings too because at times if fucks up but it is still better than withdrawing on counter.

CHIDIMA ONAFURE

Nobody will deny the fact that the ATM is better. I prefer transacting through the ATM.

MRS. MARIAM BELLO

I don’t like using the ATM because of its shortcomings. At times, you will have to join the long queue and funny enough, if it gets to your turn, it might be short of cash. There was a day I needed cash urgently and it was on a weekend. I got to the ATM spot and inserted my card, only for it to trap my card. I was stranded till Monday. Though, it is easy and convenient compared to using the counter.

MISS FOLASHADE OLALANDU

Internet has made the world a global village. Even with the way technology is advancing, we might still be able to withdraw cash from our phones. ATM is very good because we can now transfer funds, pay bills, recharge our phones.

KOREDE SAMUEL

Whenever I want to withdraw, I withdraw above N100,000 which makes me use the counter always. Though ATM they say, is convenient but I don’t even have an ATM card.

MRS. IPOOLA SHADE

The ATM is very easy and convenient. The charges they deduct from my account are just too much. I think the banking sector should do something about those charges.

MISS KIKELOMO ANTHONY

The ATM is better and convenient because it is easier and faster.

KOREDE BANTALE

The ATM is good but I prefer using the counter because the charges they usually deduct are unbearable and also ATM has several shortcomings too. So, I use the counter always.
