Mixed reactions have been trailing the proposal to remove fuel subsidy. While some want the Federal Government to stop the policy, others say the masses would suffer if subsidy is removed.

The fuel subsidy issue is a very critical one. On one hand, we need to remove it so we can plug the fund leakages and get our refineries working; while on the other, if it is removed it would drastically change everything. Especially in terms of prices of items, and that would be detrimental considering the naira which is already weak.
In the long run and if you weigh the cons and pros, you’d see that removing the subsidy is more beneficial to the majority of Nigerians, than the few who are currently reaping huge sums from it. I also feel when it is removed, proper and effective monitoring should be given to petrol marketers and filling stations to ensure they do not sell at unreasonably high prices all in the name of recovering their investments. If this is done, I think we would be fine.

We have been on this case of fuel subsidy removal for God knows how long. I really feel it has to be removed, and that’s because of the fraud that goes on behind the scene all in the name of subsidy payment. The last time we had fuel scarcity issue, the billions that was reported to be paid to the marketers is mind boggling.
Yet, every now and then, the scarcity still raises its head. It should be removed in its entirety, let’s see how much a litre of fuel would sell.

Before Buhari should consider removing fuel subsidy, he should weigh the consequences on the poor not only the rich. I am sure if subsidy is removed, we can’t be buying fuel less than N250 per litre, and that may go beyond the reach of the poor.
And I believe Buhari was voted largely by the poor with a view to having access to dividends of democracy effortlessly. So, if ordinary people can’t afford to buy fuel again, that means Buhari’s administration has equally failed. I think subsidy should remain for now.

Whether or not subsidy is removed, that doesn’t guarantee regular supply of fuel. What’s important is to ensure all our refineries kick off and handled by reliable and patriotic Nigerians. Then, Buhari himself should give the ministry close monitoring if at all he doesn’t want to double as petroleum minister.
Left to me, I think subsidy should not be removed so that the product will not be more expensive for the masses. What the sector needs is close monitoring, with that there will be a way forward as far as the sector is concerned.
