Nigerians frown at staging weddings abroad

Staging fabulous weddings abroad has become a trend among wealthy Nigerians, which to many, is a means of advancing foreign economy at the expense of ours. Some Nigerians ENCOMIUM Weekly sought their views on this also spoke in the same vein. They wanted such huge amount to be invested here in Nigeria.

‘It is just a waste of money’
– SHOAL DADA
I don’t believe in that. It is just a waste of money. What do they want to enjoy abroad that are not available in Nigeria. I believe they are only interested in showing the stuff they are made of. It’s a show of class and nothing more.
Staging superlative weddings outside Nigeria has a lot of socio-economic disadvantages. A lot of money that should have been spent right here in Nigeria to advance our economy is spent abroad. So, it’s of negative impact on the economy of our country.

‘They should invest the money here’
– MERCY OBONG
I have nothing against those staging their weddings abroad. They have the money to do so, that’s why they are embarking on such a thing. I don’t think there is anywhere it’s written in our constitution that no one should be allowed to hold his/her social engagement outside the country. All I know is that if such huge money spent on such a function is invested in other production activities, it would have been of immense benefit to the country.
Most of our wealthy people have taken it as a norm to do their weddings abroad or even stage their children’s weddings there.

‘They are spending their money’
– CHINEDU MICHAEL
There is nothing wrong with that. They are spending their money. Where people might be complaining is the fact that the money that would have been spent here to boost the economy is ferried away to the detriment of our people.
Another point is that the couple make it look as if our country is inferior to the foreign land they are staging their weddings.

‘They don’t encourage our local event managers’
– CHINONYEREM EGUZO
I don’t support it at all. I’m proud of Nigeria. The danger is that the couples don’t appreciate what they have. And they don’t encourage our local event managers, having spent millions abroad.

‘What are they trying to prove?’
– STEPHEN OLADUNJOYE
From the outset, my spirit has always been against it. Babangida, Dangote even Abacha never had their weddings abroad. What are they trying to prove. They are telling us they are not patriotic. The culture we treasure is not respected if you take your weddings abroad.
Also, you improve foreign economy when you stage lavish weddings in such places.

‘We all must build this country by ourselves’
– ANDREW EBONG
There is no honour for your country when you take your weddings abroad. It shows you are not knowledgable of the norms and value of your colour, race and culture. Many of our people abroad even return for their weddings here in Nigeria as a sign of honour to their motherland.
Maiden Ibru brought her in-laws to Nigeria for her two daughters’ wedding. We all must build this country by ourselves, Oyinbo will not do it for us. Stop it.

‘I only frown at politicians who spend tax payers’ money…’
– TINUADE ADESOJI
There is nothing wrong as much as there is financial capacity to do that. I only frown at politicians who spend tax payers’ money on their children’s weddings abroad.
It affects the local currency, there will be high demand in foreign currencies.

‘There are beautiful places in Nigeria for weddings’
– ADAOBI ONWUKWE
It is just unnecessary. There are beautiful places in Nigeria for weddings. The thing is we are just promoting other countries’ tourism potentials while our own suffers here. We deprive small businesses here the opportunity to grow.

‘I don’t see anything wrong with that’
– SARAH NEGEDU
Other than showcasing the class difference and the flamboyant lifestyle of Nigerian elites, I don’t see anything wrong with that as those weddings hardly contribute much to our economy. Considering the limitation of space at most event centers, I don’t see how a thousand or even 5,000 guests can affect a nation’s economy. Aside from chefs, food, drinks and accommodations, there is hardly other economic issues involved in weddings. Except of course one argues about taking the fan-fair out of our shores. I am indifferent about celebrity or elitist weddings taking place abroad.

‘You can do your wedding anywhere you want’
– JOY UBEKU
You can do your wedding anywhere you want, but once you make it look like a competition, then it’s your business. Like they say, over feeding is a sin. Because you have it all doesn’t mean you should waste it. You can actually save a soul with little of it.
I will say instead of wasting that much out there, why not invest it in our youths. There are a lot of jobless people out there. If we have enough companies I don’t think the street will be filled with jobless people.

‘It’s a once in a life time event’
– TUNDE OYELAMI
Personally, I don’t see anything wrong in them staging weddings abroad. It’s a once in a life time event. However, it shows that we don’t have the needed facilities to attract tourists here in Nigeria. If we set our house in order, they won’t have to go abroad. Rather, they will bring the world to Nigeria.
Sadly, it portrayed negativity on our socio economic status. Money meant to be invested here is taken abroad.

‘It shows the wrong mentality of wealthy Nigerians’
– REBECCA AFOLAYAN
It shows the wrong mentality of wealthy Nigerians. Instead of investing their resources on the less privileged, they squander them on frivolities abroad. Money meant to improve our country is used to better the lot of another country.
