Nike Oshinowo talks about her twins and new life -‘I’m in a stable relationship with myself’

…late night talk show debuts on Nov. 27

You are never too old to start something new – is the moral one learns as one-time Nigeria’s Most Beautiful Girl and international style icon, Nike Oshinowo, at 47, births her own late night TV talk show – Late Night with Nike Oshinowo (LNWNO).
Late Night with Nike Oshinowo, set to premiere on AIT on Thursday (November 27) at 11pm, is a first-of-its-kind programme which will feature engaging and candid interviews and conversations with politicians, industry leaders, celebrities, artists, actors and musicians.
In an exclusively chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the proud mother-of-two speaks on her new venture and more…

Congratulations. This project is evidently a dream come true for you. How do you feel seeing all the hardwork pay off?
Like any dream that comes to fruition makes you proud, I feel immensely proud of myself. It’s wonderful to see something that you’ve been incubating for so long come to fruition. It is amazing and it is quite a feat. My father used to say that the grave yard is full of people who died with their dreams intact. So, every time we achieve something, we should celebrate it.
Why did you decide to do a TV show?
I like TV, I like watching television. I like watching precisely the kind of show that I’m doing now. I want one show which gives me everything from current affairs, to the happening music, all the new movies, as well as the stars that are doing well from the Omotolas to the Genevieves – while at the same time watching conversations with politicians, business leaders and those who are in charge of our country without having to change channel – LNWNO is that show.
What exactly sparked the idea for this TV show?
A brilliant holiday! (laughs). I think we underestimate the importance of taking a break. I do take breaks. I think such ideas tend to come when we unwind.
Should we expect to see the complete Nike Oshinowo on the show?
I’m not sure about the full Nike Oshinowo, but you will see the different aspects that make up Nike Oshinowo. I have a sense of humour, I also have a very strong opinion (which will be seen on the show), I love music, art and culture. I also have a business mind. What the Nigerian audience will get to see on the show in addition to amazing content is that Nike Oshinowo is actually a well-rounded human being and that I have political views and I like to read – all these will be seen on the show.
So, we can rightly say the show will be a reflection of you?
You know, most of these kind of shows are somewhat a reflection of the hosts – but it’s not strictly about me. It is not a Nike Oshinowo show where she’s there singing and dancing. It is a show with different aspects hosted by Nike Oshinowo.
About how much has gone into the production of this show?
How much has gone into it? Hmmm…I can’t quite remember.
How far do you see this show going?
The best shows have literally stood the test of time. So, I don’t see why I wouldn’t be doing this show till I’m 70 – as long as the audience find me relevant and interesting.
What would you say to me if for instance I’m not convinced?
I’ll just say tune in and watch episode one.
You are a former beauty queen, entrepreneur, philanthropist, socialite, style icon and now TV talk show host – that’s a lot. How do you plan to juggle these?
I can sit here and pretend it’s all about me or I can own up and tell you that I have an amazing team. You’ve met my team and you’ve seen how they are. The fact is they put me forward and let me take the shine, but I have a phenomenal team.
How are your twins doing?
My twins are doing really well, thank you.
You seem to be very happy, can that be attributed to you being in a good relationship?
I am really happy. I think I understand where you are getting at, I’m in a really stable relationship with myself. I’m almost 50 and one good thing about this age is you finally know who you really are and you are content with yourself. I think maybe that’s what you are seeing. I’m comfortable in my own skin now, I’ve accepted my flaws and even embraced them. I’m really happy with myself. For me, that’s the most important relationship to have, and I’m loving this relationship.
By virtue of the fact that you work with a number of young people you have a good idea of how they are. What is that thing you’d like to see change in young people?
The one thing I think young people need to change is that urge for instant gratification and I hope from watching the show, they’d get that. Anything that comes in an instant, be it instant fame, instant success, instant money and that you haven’t worked hard to earn, beware of it. Young ladies, if you see me with a handbag and try to emulate me, bear in mind how many years it took me to get to that handbag. For young men, don’t think your first car should be an SUV or such car. You work at it. Don’t wake up at the age of 19 or so and expect to have everything. Life’s a process.
