Nollywood is now moving to more acceptable norm of practice’ – PATRICK DOYLE

SHOWBIZ impresario, Patrick Doyle is better accepted in the broadcasting industry where he had garnered a lot of experience than in the make-believe world, where he featured in some movies.

ENCOMIUM Weekly had an interview with the handsome and hunky hubby of the popular TV presenter, Ireti Doyle at Music Africa’s office at Surulere, Lagos, where he told us what he is doing at the moment.  He equally talked about some issues concerning the broadcasting industry as well as that of movie.

You’ve been absent from the screen for sometime now, what is the reason?

There is no reason. Everything has a time.  But I think it has to do with the fact that it is time for other people to emerge. Nevertheless, if I have a good reason to be on air, I will be on air.  There’s no point being on air for a joke’s sake.  So, that is it.

What do you do currently?

I consult for people. I equally produce documentaries and commercials.

There is this report that you are now a pastor, how true is it?

It is not true.  The people behind the report must be joking, there’s no iota of truth in it.

Does your appearance in adverts have anything to do with your being a model?

No, I am not a model.  The young man, Evans Akere, who uses me for adverts for his designs, does that to sell his brand.  He feels that I’ve got what it takes to play such role.  So, for me, I think one has to use his goodwill to help other people, especially the hard working ones.  So, that is exactly what I’m doing for him.

These days, you’re constantly seen around Reverend Chris Okotie, has it got anything to do with his political ambition?

Chris Okotie has been my friend since 1980.  We have a 30 year-old relationship.  So, he’s my friend and pastor.  I’ve been attending the Household of God Church for nearly 20 years now.  So, seeing me with him should not be strange.

So, you don’t do any work for him as regards his political ambition?

Of course, I’m involved in it.  I am the National Vice Chairman of Fresh Democratic Party for South-South zone.  So, I have to be involved in his campaign because he is my friend.

What’s your impression about actors and musicians who are campaigning for politicians?

As Nigerians, they have a right to campaign for any politician of their choice.  And I think it is important that everybody be involved.  For me, they are leading the way by showing the importance of the involvement of everybody.

As a renowned broadcaster, how would you describe the broadcasting industry in Nigeria?

It’s viable.  Things are getting better every day.  There is improvement in the technology and its application. The truth is that we are blessed with some of the finest broadcasters in the world.  I’m not going to talk about the negative aspect but the positive aspect is that we have some young people like I.K, the gentleman who used to be known as Wildchild.  I’m so proud of him and many others like that on radio and television who have giving me reasons to be very proud as a broadcaster.

What to you are the challenges in the broadcasting industry?

Challenges are everywhere.  There’s no industry that doesn’t have challenges, the broadcasting industry inclusive.  But the important thing is not to focus on the challenges, rather on the solutions.  There are many solutions but the most important thing is that there is a choice.  If you’re not satisfied with Station A, you go to Station B or C or others.  The sweetest thing about it is that there is a choice.  So, whatever challenges Station A is facing, will not probably be the same thing that Stations B, C and D may be facing.  The listeners and viewers have a choice, likewise the broadcasters.  The broadcaster can work for Cool FM and equally go to work for Radio Nigeria depending on his inclination.  So, whatever challenges they have, they are within the industry and so, can be sorted out.

Having been in the movie industry before, how would you describe it at the moment?

I am not qualified to talk about the movie industry because I’m not an actor.  But as a Nigerian, I learnt that there’s a law governing the industry now.  To me, it’s a good thing because when there’s a law, it is a time to go and reflect.  I have had my resolutions about the intellectual quality of the content of movies that have been produced in the recent past.  And it appears that we’re now beginning to see more seasoned stories being told.  The likes of Ije, Figurine and some others which are also nice.  So, this law has worked well as people are now thinking seriously so as to come up with works that are technically produced.

So, what would you say is the greatest challenge facing the industry now?

Just like I said before, I am not qualified to talk about the challenges as I am not one of its practitioners.  But as a Nigerian, I think it has to do with the quality of the people involved.  The movie industry has to move beyond the man at Iweka Road (in Onitsha market) and the one at Idumota (Lagos).  It has to move to more acceptable norms of practice.

How would you rate the quality of movies produced these days?

Nowadays, the movies produced are of high quality and also shot professionally as against what we had in the past.  Like I said before, we have moved beyond Iweka and Idumota now to shooting professional movies.  And we are doing it to the credit of the Nigerian public.

What are those things you do at your leisure?

I watch television and also sleep.

What is your philosophy of life?

As a Christian that I am, my philosophy of life has to do with Christian values.  “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you and love your neighbour as you love yourself.”
