Researchers say there is proof that oats really offer the best start of the day. They lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Oats also helps reduce levels of low-density lipo-protein (bad cholesterol) which collects and blocks the lining of the arteries.
Oats contain beta-gulcans – which helps to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. This process prevents high blood sugar and insulin levels that would encourage our bodies produce and store fat.
In a study led by Dr. Vladimr Vuksan from St. Michael’s Hospital, they examined 58 clinical trials involving almost 4,000 people from around the world that reviewed the effect of diets enriched with oat beta-gulcan compared with controlled diets on LDL cholesterol.
The result showed that diets enriched with about 3.5 grams a day of beta-glucan fiber from oats were found to modestly improve LDL cholesterol. Cholesterol was reduced by 4.2 percent
