October 1 gulped N200 million, says Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan’s award-winning movie, October 1, has bagged a distribution deal with one of the biggest providers of on-demand Internet streaming media, Netflix. The actor, director and movie producer, in a brief chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, spoke about his Sun award and how his A rated movie, October 1 gulped N200 million in producing it.

Congrats on your award, how do you feel?

I feel rewarded. When your work is appreciated, it gives you joy. I am delighted. I thank God and can’t feel appreciated anymore in the industry.

Were you expecting the award?

I wasn’t expecting the award. I don’t have any ally in the Sun, so it was on the achievement I have recorded so far.

What would you say earned you the award?

I would say hard work.

What do you think stood you out among other nominees?

It’s my style, my approach. People see a lot of difference in my approach. My films are not only recognised here in Nigeria, they are recognised in other countries too.

Your movie, October 1 has fetched you so many awards, how do you feel?

I am happy, and I have continued to set standards.

What inspired the movie?

Nigeria as a country, the fact that there is a whole lot of political distress, so I put the elements together to tell the story in an audio visual way. Religious angle is there, cultural differences. I do film to remind people to reflect on how things were done in the past so that the coming generation would learn from it.

What were the major challenges?

The major challenge was fund, then the fact that there is no electricity and other Nigerian factors.

How much did the movie gulp?

N200 million.

Would you say you have recovered all the money invested in the movie?

That’s impossible. We have not made half of the money.

You have been tagged one of the best producers in the industry, how do you feel?

I feel honoured.

Tell us your success story?

I don’t really have one, but from the beginning, I have always been consistent in my style.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a new film and a television series in partnership with Law School.

This is a new year, what are your plans?

It would be a very busy year for me and I am going to be working all through.
