THE frantic struggle for political offices has become the major characteristic demonstrated by Nigerian politicians, leading to many politicians decamping from one political party to another. This could be likened to the recent declaration of the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mr. Segun Adesegun, who just announced his defection to the newly formed Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by former governor of the state, Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
The deputy governor was said to have earlier signified his intention to move out of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following his unresolved differences with his principal, Senator Ibikunle Amosun which he later denied via his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kolade Lanrewaju who spoke to ENCOMIUM Weekly at the peak of the speculation. However, a couple of days back, the number two indigene was reported to have defected to Osoba-led SDP.
This was confirmed to us on Monday, December 15, 2014, via Mr. Lanrewaju, his CPS. He also added that the Ago Iwoye born politician is also in the governorship race of the state on the platform of SDP.
“Yes, it’s not a rumour, he has truly decamped to SDP. Not only that, he is also vying for the guber ticket and if he gets the nod, he will be the party’s flag bearer in the 2015 governorship election.”
ENCOMIUM Weekly’s efforts to seek APC’s reaction to the exit of the deputy governor from the party and its effects on Amosun’s second term bid, via the party’s spokesman, Mr. Sola Lawal were unsuccessful as all the calls put through to his mobile phone were ignored.
However, a party chieftain from Oke Mosan, Mr. Hassan Oloyede, told ENCOMIUM Weekly that whether or not the deputy governor moves out of APC, that has nothing to do with Amosun’s victory in 2015.
“Let me tell you, the defection of Segun Adesegun wouldn’t affect the victory of our great party in 2015. Let him align with Osoba and other lawmakers that have defected, they will all lose out. I am very sure of that.”
