The Ogun State Government has assured the United Nation International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) of support in the campaign for exclusive breast feeding amongst women, especially nursing mothers.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Adedayo Adeneye, who received the South West UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Mrs. Ada Ezeogu and the State Nutrition Officer, Mr Olugbenga Idowu in his
office in Abeokuta, said this is necessary because the campaign for exclusive breast feeding requires the support of all.
Chief Adeneye said his Ministry would not only make use of the State-owned media stations to spread the awareness on exclusive breast feeding but also involve relevant stakeholders in promoting the campaign geared towards educating and enlightening nursing mothers on the need to breastfeed their babies exclusively even beyond six months.
“Exclusive breastfeeding really has great impact on the child, because a healthy child would definitely be a productive child, hence the need for us to support the campaign. Apart from the emotional attachment
the child develops with the mother, the health benefit is also important to the children,” he said.
The Commissioner further advised fathers to be willing partners for the exclusive breast feeding campaign as well as encourage their wives.
Speaking earlier, the South West UNICEF Specialist, Mrs. Ada Ezeogu appreciated the government for providing veritable media platform that would fast track the dissemination of the campaign on exclusive breast feeding, saying the World Exclusive Breast Feeding Day was meant to create awareness on exclusive breast feeding of a child for the first six months of birth, adding that this process is the most beneficial
and preventive measure against infant mortality.
“I want to commend Ogun State Government for the political will to partner UNICEF in enlightening the populace, especially nursing mothers,” she said.
