Ogun workers warm up for another strike

Ogun State civil servants are warming up to continue their strike because the government has refused to meet up with their demands. The doctors, through their chairman and secretary, Dr Oladunni Adetola and Adetonwa Festus respectively, informed that the association had written series of letters to the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun on the need to restructure health facilities and address shortage of staff without getting any response.

ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with the Commissioner of Information, Mr. Dayo Adeneye. He said, “I am hearing this for the first time but if truly that is the case, they are free to exercise their civil right. As far as we are concerned, the government is trying to ensure workers’ salaries are not delayed compared to what is happening in other states. Ogun State allocation from the Federal Government is below N1 billion and the salaries of workers in Ogun State alone is up to N9 billion. None of the workers has even come to ask the governor how he’s coping. Despite the poor allocation, the government is still on capital projects which nobody has asked where the money is coming from.

“Governor constantly meets with the workers and shows them all the papers concerning how he runs the state. That means he is running a transparent government. So, they should understand that the government really cares about them.

“Ogun is the only state paying above the national minimum wage and we have paid the workers up to February this year. What is the protest about? They should be considerate and appreciate all what Governor Amosun is doing.

“If there is any information concerning that, I will communicate to you.”

Civil servants in Ogun state embarked on a one week warning strike. The warning strike was started on March 7, and it lasted for two weeks before it was called off to give the government a chance to attend to the demands of the workers. With the refusal of the government to meet up with the workers’ demands, they are warming up to continue the strike.
