OJB, My Lagos, ‘We’re always hustling, no matter how much you have in your account’

“The studio rat’ behind those exciting songs loves what he hates most about Lagos…

Where do you live in Lagos and why?

I live in Surulere, Igbaja. No. 4 to be exact. And the reason is that I was born in Surulere basically. That whole environment. Though I grew up on the Island, we grew up in Ikoyi, I’ll say when you spend 20 years of your life in an area, it becomes part of you. So, Surulere has become part of me, and as God would have it, that’s where most of the things as far as entertainment is concerned in audiovisuals come from.

What’s your earliest Lagos experience?

The most remarkable one that I can remember till date was when I could get a cab all the way from the island, from Lafiaji, and go all the way to Ijesha and I’d just pay N1. It was so safe, you didn’t have to worry about if you were going to be kidnapped on the road.

What do you like most about Lagos?

As much as it might actually seem to be a bad point, it is a good point, which is the fact that an average Lagosian is a hustler. I remember when I went to Ghana, I felt sick because of their slow pace. They’re very laid back about work and very content. But in Lagos, we’re always hustling, no matter how much you have in your account.

What do you hate most about Lagos?

The thing I hate most is the thing I love most, and that’s the fact that Lagos is all about hustling.

What do you miss when you’re outside Lagos?

It’s just one thing, that same one thing is a good thing and it’s a bad thing. What I miss most about Lagos is that hustling. You just find out that you’re attached to it somehow.

Where do you shop in Lagos?

I hardly shop. I don’t go out to shop. Most of the things that I get or wear are the things people bring in, or my wife goes out to shop and says oh, I saw this for you, do you like it? I’m a strict hardcore studio rat. Although that’s changing a little bit now.

What’s favourite Lagos hangout?

I must confess, I’m just getting to adapt to really hanging out. I’m the home studio kind of person.

Who’s your favourite Lagos celebrity?

Actually, when it comes to that, I’ve never really thought of it. So, I don’t really know.

What new projects are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on my new album. The title is No Drammer. And of course, I’m also working on 2face’s new album. Funny enough, the two albums are linked because the meaning of saying No Drammer was because it was in the air that there was a little rift between the two of us. So the No Drammer is just saying that look, it’s over. So, it’s linked.
