Olu Jacobs at 74: 4 milestones in the life of the veteran actor


Nollywood Icon and multi award winning actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs popularly known as Olu Jacobs is 74 today (Monday, July 11). Olu Jacobs who is married to Nollywood sensation Joke Sylva  was born on July 11, 1942 to Egba Alake parents.

His early childhood days were spent in Kano. He decided to pursue an acting career after attending one of Hubert Ogunde’s annual concert parties at Colonial Hotel in Kano. Afterwards, he travelled to England where he studied acting at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

His acting career, which started in the 70s, has seen him feature in various British television shows and series (for example, The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large), international films (some of which include John Irvin’s war film The Dogs of War, Roman Polanski’s adventure-comedy Pirates ,1986)) and numerous Nollywood movies.

The veteran actor has in his glistering career received five Continent Best Actor Award and Life Time Achievement Award in Cameroon and Ghana, among other awards.

  • Olu Jacobs was a recipient best actor of the award (Leading role) at the 2007 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
  • Olu Jacobs was honoured with the Industry Merit Award for outstanding achievements in acting at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards(AMVCA).
  • Olu Jacobs, alongside his wife Joke Sylva, was honoured with Lifetime Achievement awards at the 2016 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
  • He was conferred with the National honors of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR). by President Goodluck Johnathan in 2011.
