One more person falls into poverty every ten seconds in Nigeria

More Nigerians are falling into extreme poverty every day, according to the World Poverty Clock.

The country of 194,645,879 (at 11:30 am, Thursday, January 25, 2018) has 82,727,335 battling with extreme poverty (about 42.5 percent of our population).
In fact, one more person slides into penury, squalor and destitution every ten seconds in Nigeria.
Instead of recording people escaping from poverty, Nigeria has a minus 6.4 percent current escape rate. The target of 12.2 percent target escape rate is a mirage.
The World Poverty Clock which “provides real-time poverty estimates monitors progress against ending extreme poverty”, UN’s first Sustainable Development Goal.
The current escape rate in the world is 1.1 percent against the target of 1.5.
At 11:30 am on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 627,389,814 people in the world suffer extreme poverty.  While 58,046 escaped poverty today, 12,081 slid into extreme poverty.
About 8 percent of the world’s population (of 7.562 billion) live in extreme poverty. But in Nigeria, it’s almost half of the population.
Extreme poverty, also described as absolute poverty, destitution or penury, was defined by the UN in 1995 as “a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information.”
Causes of poverty are listed as “changing trends in the economy, lack of education, high divorce rate, overpopulation, epidemic diseases and environmental problems.”
