2016/2017 academic session will commence in September. Amazingly, most parents are not sure of meeting up with their responsibilities, most especially now that the country is going through economic recession.

ENCOMIUM Weekly sampled the opinion of parents on how they are preparing for the forthcoming academic session…

OLU AKANJI

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I am far from being prepared. August is almost coming to an end in less than a month, my children would be going back to school. I have three of them in boarding house and one is still in primary school. We have not bought all the necessary things they would need for the term. Their school fees is also not yet complete.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

Yes, of course. The school increased its boarding house fees by N10,000. I don’t really blame them, it is the reality of things on ground.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

I don’t have an answer to that. I only rely on the grace of God. All my plans have not worked out so far, so I am left with no alternative than to keep calling on God for assistance.

MARK OJEI

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

We are getting ready in bits. My wife has started buying the necessary things the children need for the next academic session. She will visit the school next week to purchase some textbooks for the children.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

No, there was no increment. There was an increment last year, there shouldn’t be one this year.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

God has been faithful. We have been able to purchase some items by God’s grace. We will complete the rest when school resumes.

JOHNSON ISHOLA

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

By God’s grace, we are preparing. I have paid my first child’s school fees, we hope to make payment for the second one next week. When they resume, we will take their teller to the school.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

There was increment in transportation fees so we decided to look for alternative. They will stop taking bus to and fro. I am making arrangement with one of our neighbours. His wife will be free to pick all of them after closing while I drop my children and theirs before going to work.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

Thank God that we were able to make alternative arrangement for their transportation. If not, I wouldn’t be able to pay their fees now. Transport fees for each child is N30,000 and I have two children in the school, that alone is almost enough to pay for their school fees. God that has helped us to pay for one will provide for us so that we can pay for the other one too.

MRS. AYINDE BUKOLA

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

In everything we should give thanks. We are preparing gradually. Two of my children are in boarding house, the other has not gotten admission to a tertiary institution. So, she is working till she gains admission.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

Yes, boarding fees increased by N15,000 for each child.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

I am depending on cooperative. I will collect my share next month. It is really timely. That’s how I have been able to cope since their father passed on. My first daughter is so understanding, she is saving money and promised to get her brothers some necessities.

OKECHUKWU

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

We thank God, though I am far from being prepared. Business has been very slow. I am just praying that things would pick up before the school resumes. Buying of socks and other things would be done by their mother. My own is just to pay school fees.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

No, there was no increment. If they had increased it, I would just withdraw them and take them to a neighbouring school.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

I pray business gets better. A lot of people owe me. Most of them will just give part payment and promise to complete payment later.

GEORGE

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I don’t have much preparation to make. No school fees again. Thanks to the school that increased their fees and made me withdraw the children to a public school.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

Yes, it was increased beyond my capacity.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

I have taken them to a public school. We just have to buy books and school uniforms for them. It is a great relief. I wouldn’t have coped if we didn’t take that decision.

CHIDI NWANKWO

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

We have not started preparing. No money yet to buy anything. Business has really not been good. My shop is almost empty and there’s no money to restock.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

There was increment, I protested because I have not paid the outstanding bill and they are adding more to it.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

We would keep on trusting God for better days. I just pray that things would get better and I would be able to perform my responsibilities as at when due.

ANDREW OKOYE

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

We hope to start that next month. I am already saving for their school fees though the savings is nothing to write home about, but it is better than nothing. Their mother is also working towards next month. We would put all we have together and pay in installment.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

No, they did not increase their school fees. That was my prayer before the school vacated. I even had to attend parent/teacher’s meeting and it was one of the issues I raised. I was happy the school reasoned with parents.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

The school will extend deadline for payment. They are also aware that times are hard. I will pay installment by God’s grace.

MR RASHEED BELLO

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

Everything is in the hands of God. They have not ended summer coaching, Insha Allah, we would cope. This session will not be an exception.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

Yes, there was slight adjustment in transport fare. My children don’t take school bus, so we are not affected.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

Insha Allah, we would pay. No matter how a man plans, only God has the final say. Times and season are in His hands.

MR GANI SALAMI

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I don’t want to think about resumption. They have not ended the summer coaching. Let that one end first, before we think of resumption. Only God knows tomorrow.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

They did and I had to change their school. They are going to start in one of the neighbourhood schools next session. We have to save cost.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

Feeding them during this break is a whole responsibility not to talk of buying all these minor things they need for another session. I pray God will bless us in other to meet up.

EFOULE

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

Yes, we are getting ready. My wife has been going from one bookshop to the other so as to get the best offer for their books. I am also counting days and checking my pocket. God is still alive.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

Yes, they increased their fees and we changed their school. At least the school we took them to charge N30,000 less. It’s still a means of saving money.

OLABISI DANIEL

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I am not preparing yet. I have part payment of their fees, so, I am not bothered about it. Once I pay what I have, the school will bear with us till I can afford the rest.

Have your children’s school fees increased?

No. if they had, I would have withdrew them.

How do you hope to cope with the current economic recession as regards payment of school fees?

Planning ahead is no longer working. You would spend the money even before you know it. Everything is expensive. Feeding the family is now tough, very tough.

AKOMOLAFE

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I thank God for helping me and my wife scale through the last session. Right now, I don’t want to think of preparation because the bad state of the economy is not helping issues and the school understands. I have decided to take every day as it comes and hope God will see us through.

OJO BELLO

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I am trying my best. My son is about to enter JSS1 and his fees is N100,000. Right now, I am scouting for a cheaper school with standard that is also affordable. None of my children are attending summer lesson because I cannot afford it and God will not allow it get to the stage of taking them to a public school.

EFFIONG AKPAN

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I am preparing. Even the school authorities know that things are very difficult right now. So, I hope they will reduce the way they demand for money from parents. I am trying to make things easy for myself this session.

MRS. FAWSAT OGUNDELE

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

I thank God last session has come and gone and this session is here. I don’t have to worry much because I have an understanding wife who likes to plan. Immediately my children brought their bill for this term, my wife and I had already started making plans. By God’s grace, as they are resuming, we are paying their fees.

BANKOLA ADENIYAN

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?

Preparing for their session? The thought of it alone makes me wish I was still single. I am trying my best, but the problem is I have three undergraduates. One is going into SS3 and another JSS1. That’s a lot of money, but I am trying with the little I can do and my wife is very supportive.

MRS AKANBI

How are you preparing for your children’s resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session?
