Pockets of violence blight polls

THERE were pockets of violence in some parts of the federations.  Some even resulted in death.  ENCOMIUM Weekly has been following the situation…

 

VIOLENCE IN OSUN

There was a pocket of violence in Osun State.  Two also died in the fracas that ensued in Ikirun and Ifetedo, Ile-Ife of the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula confirmed this in a press briefing in the state working for over 5,000 policemen, the police have arrested ten people for electoral violence.

 

GUNMEN ATTACK BAUCHI VOTERS, POLICE STATIONS

As the presidential and National Assembly’s elections were going on on Saturday, March 28, an unspecified number of gunmen in a convoy of over 10 vehicles attacked voters at polling units in Kirfi and Alkaleri in Bauchi State.  They also allegedly burned electoral materials.

These development reportedly forced voters and electoral officials to flee the polling centres.

Relatedly, the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Bauchi, Alkaleri and Kirfi following the attacks.

In a statement on Sunday, March 29, 2015, the police said the gunmen also attacked two of their stations.

 

RIOTS IN RIVERS

Thousands of APC members led by the party’s governorship aspirant in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside took to the streets on Sunday, March 29, 2015 to protest the conduct of the Saturday, March 28 election.  Before the protest that ended at INEC’s headquarters in the state, violence was recorded in Emohua where INEC’s office was allegedly razed by political thugs.

 

YOUTHS ATTACK PDP SUPPORTER IN JOS

In Jos, Plateau State, irate youths allegedly set ablaze the house of a PDP chieftain, Alhaji Mohammed Adam Alkali, at Angwa Rogo area of Jos.

Reports say the PDP supporter made an uncomplimentary remark about one of the youths’ leaders, which prompted their retaliatory attack.  Police confirmed the violent attack.

 

OWERRI BOILS AS OKOROCHA ALLEGES ARMY INVASION

Alleged violence, intimidation and manipulations were the hallmark of the March 28 election.

According to Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, all of these acts were perpetrated by the PDP who were assisted by security agencies.  He has since petitioned INEC on the weighty allegations.

Okorocha had earlier rejected some of the results of the election which his party (the APC) largely lost to the PDP.
