The head of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Francis has clarified his remark that Catholics should not breed “like rabbits” when he said economic injustice – not large families – was the real cause of poverty, during his weekly address at the Vatican today (Wednesday, January 21).
The Pope had made the rabbit comment during a news conference aboard the plane returning from a week-long Asia trip on Monday (January 19) while speaking about birth control. His unusually frank language raised eyebrows, particularly on social media, where some commentators said it was offensive.
He, however, has cleared the air saying: “I have heard it said that families with many children and the birth of many children are among the causes of poverty. I think that is a simplistic opinion”.
