The price of milk in the United Kingdom (UK) is now so low that it is cheaper than water as farmers warn that the dairy industry faces extinction.
Big companies such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are selling four pints of milk for £1 (N270) while the likes of Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland are selling it for less.
Rob Harrison, chairman of the National Farmers’ Union dairy board, said: “It looks like this is going to be the worst crisis the dairy industry has ever seen. Retailers are fighting over market share and they are driving farmers out of business”.
