Prices of foodstuff still high in spite of Buhari’s victory

General Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at the just concluded presidential poll was welcomed with high expectations that prices of goods will drop drastically. ENCOMIUM Weekly sampled the opinion of market women and others about this development.

MRS. FUNKE OYEYEMI

Can you compare the prices of goods before the election and after Buhari emerged president elect?

Prices of goods are now on the very high side. I thought it would go down after the election but things have not gone down. I was in the market yesterday, I couldn’t buy all I wanted to buy. They were too expensive.

ANGELA DAVIES

That is not true. Things have been pretty expensive since the exchange rate of dollar went up. So, right now things are really expensive. I am just coming back from the market.

If you want to buy anything now, it is almost double your budget. There is a dry fish I buy for N1,000, it is not less than N1,500 now. Meat has gone up as well, irrespective of your bargaining power.

CATHERINE AGAZER

Not really but the positive impact is that, it has boosted the investors’ confidence in Nigeria Stock Exchange market which has not been doing well for a very long time. The market had some gain and the naira gained some strength against the dollar.

UJU EMEKA

Things are a bit on the high side since elections started, don’t think it was because Buhari won. The hike has been there since and it seems to be getting worse. You need to see how expensive tomatoes are not. We don’t even know how much can be enough to feed a family of five for one week. It is really terrible. I bought N700 worth, I could count what they put in the cellophane bag. If you want to buy N50 worth, it is just three pieces, can you imagine!

JOAN IGWE

He has not been sworn in. Though people are happy about his victory, not withstanding, things have been expensive since elections started. It has gotten worse, may God help Nigeria.

DORCAS POPOOLA

The price of things are still the same for now. But l believe things are going to change for good soon. I mean, after the election.

MRS. JOHNSON

Prices of things are still the same. Easter celebration influenced some but not too serious. I still sell Semolina the same price I was selling before the elections, N2,000 for 10kg. There was a time it rose to N2,100,some still sell it at that amount. Wheat is still N1,900 and N1,800 for 10kg. Some sell N100 more than that.

MAMA IKE, Fish seller

Price of things have not gone down, I still buy a cartoon of Titus fish for N8,000 and N9,000. So, I can’t sell one less than N250, N300.

IK, Provision seller

Prices of goods are still the same. It is just that some are scarce. Dano milk has been increasing, now the N20 sachet is no longer available. Milo, Bournvita still go for the same price. Tooth paste still go for the same price N170 and N200 depending on where you buy.
