Rain of endorsement for Mr. Ibu

Opens Up on deals with Merrybet, GoTV and Glo

This is obviously the happiest moments for the Nollywood comic act, John Okafor famously known as Mr. Ibu. Still basking in the euphoria of his endorsement as Merrybet Gold brand ambassador, the talented script interpreter was last week unveiled as GoTV ambassador .

On Sunday, June 6, 2014, Mr. Ibu spoke with ENCOMIUM Weekly on his endorsement. He also spoke on the reign of Ibinabo Fiberesima as the AGN President, advising her not to bother coming back for the second term.

Few weeks ago, you were unveiled as Merrybet Gold brand ambassador, and now it’s GoTV. How does it?

It’s a great feeling to be appointed as ambassador of the companies, both the Merrybet and GoTV. I believe my presence would add flavour to the brands I am representing, at the same time it would bring my face to the public. It’s something every man would always pray to God for. I cannot say I am the best prayer, so many people prayed and God answered their prayers too. The fact is God has ways of answering prayers. Therefore, I am grateful to God for the endorsements because I can’t really say why they chose me.

What is your role as GoTV ambassador?

Just like every other company, I will be doing a lot of campaign for the brand as a face of GoTV on the billboard, posters and the rest. I will doing series of TV commercials and so many other things meant to bring people’s attention to our products. I am going to create competition from which people would win a decoder, among others.

What’s the worth of this deal?

Do you want me to say it? No, it’s private between me and the company. However, it’s not about the money. For me to be picked out of many is a special joy, not the money. I am not the only artiste in Nigeria, but for me to be called, I am grateful. I am not saying I am the best, but something unique about me, which attracted them to me.

We’ve seen you in a couple of Glo commercials. Do you have a deal with Glo as well?

Yes, but these are different companies. Although my job is a little bit interrelated, it has to do with promoting the brands through their campaigns. I won’t say more than that.

Assessment of industry now and then?

If I should talk about the industry now you would make me shout because the industry is giving me headache. I am not happy at all. I believe we are mature enough to be independent. As big as AGN is, we don’t have a national headquarters. I mean, a film village. Go to other countries in Africa, they have most of these facilities, but we have not been able to achieve these because of greed. All the money promised by President Jonathan and other state government, what have they done with it? Whether it has been collected or not, we don’t know! It’s very painful, considering the number of years we have been in existence.

As a stakeholder, what have you done to correct them?

For instance, the incumbent AGN president rolled out her successes as president, planning to go for the second term.

What are you doing about this?

Going for the second term is making the anger in people expand. It’s better for her not to come again. She should leave the office and allow another person to try. No progress at all. I am not part of it. As I speak with you, Ibinabo has about two to three court cases. We are tired, we want another person. We should try a new person, let’s see what he or she would do. About 90 percent of people she’s ruling say No, but she insisted. Why? Because she’s gaining something.
