A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today (June 27, 2016) annulled the election of Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Dr. Uche Ugah.
Justice Okon Abang in his Judgment ordered Ikpeazu to vacate office immediately for Ugah who came second in the PDP’s primaries.
Why he was sacked?
Ikpeazu was found guilty of submitting false information to his party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the governorship primary in December 2014. Two members of the PDP had accused Ikpeazu of failing to pay personal income tax promptly for 2010 and 2011 in line with Section 24(1) of the 1999 constitution, which states that it shall be the duty of every citizen to… declare his income honestly to appropriate and lawful agencies and pay his tax promptly.”
In suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/ 1086/2014, dated December 22, 2014, Obasi Eke and Chukwuemeka Mba asked the PDP and INEC to9 disqualify Ikpeazu from contesting the governorship election.
