A record number of A-levels and General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) grades have been changed from exams taken this summer, according to latest figures from Ofqual (England’s exams regulator), with concerns over marking growing.
The figures reveal that 45,500 results have been altered after a 48 percent increase in the number of papers sent back to exam boards for re-checking and re-marking.
Overall, nearly one in five (19.1%) inquiries resulted in a grade change, the figures show.
Head teachers have, however, said they were not surprised by the rise as many schools had seen “worrying” results which they did not believe reflected students’ abilities.
