Regular beer drinking conserves good cholesterol level

A study by Pennsylvania State University, USA, has shown that regular drinking of beer can cut the risk of having stroke in later life.

The finding examined 80,000 adults over six years, and the result showed  that those who drank moderate amounts of alcohol on a daily basis had far greater control over their cholesterol levels compared to those who did not drink at all.

According to the researcher, “The focus was on alcohol’s effect on cholesterol level. It is not unheard of for doctors to warn against excessive drinking for the toll it could put on your cardiovascular system. But this study found controlled alcohol consumption is in fact healthier than going tee-total.”

Cholesterol level (HDL) defends the heart from building up bad ones, which can result to clogs in the veins, thereby making it harder for blood to flow to the heart. The study recorded as steady decline in HDL levels over time in all participants.

This research, though carried out in America, only included Chinese participants. It reveals that men who consume one or two units a day and women who had one unit a day experienced a far slower decline compared to teetotal or heavy drinkers. Likewise, those who drink spirit would have to limit their consumption to enjoy the same benefits.

Shue Huang who was the lead researcher promised to do further studies in other populations and other types of alcohol.
