Samsung halts production, sales of Galaxy Note 7s

Samsung, the South Korean technology giant, has permanently ceased sales and production of its high end Galaxy Note 7 after several reported cases of explosion, including how a Galaxy Note 7 caught fire during a lab test in Singapore. Owners of the device are expected to return the phone for a refund or an exchange for a different Samsung phone.

In a statement issued by the company, “We recently readjusted the production volume for thorough investigation and quality control, but putting consumer safety as top priority, we have reached final decision to halt production of Galaxy Note 7s.

“For the benefit of consumers’ safety, we stopped sales and exchange of the Galaxy Note 7 and have consequently decided to stop production.”

Since the device was launched, at least five fire cases were reported in replacement devices in the USA. Meanwhile, Samsung said it had sold about 45,000 note 7s through pre-orders in Europe.
