Screen siren Bimbo Thomas denies romance with MC Oluomo

Bimbo Thomas is one of the most sought after actresses right now, especially in the Yoruba movie genre. In this interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the University of Lagos graduate of Theatre Art spoke exclusively on issues revolving around her career.

She also opened up on her alleged romance with National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) king-pin, Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, otherwise known as MC Oluomo and more…

How would you describe your career at the moment?

Favourable! Awesome! Blessed! I’m not there yet but I’m farther from where I started. So, today I give more glory to God for how far He has brought me and for the Cannan Land He is taking me to because my life and career are in His hands.

What are you working on right now, career wise?

My project. It’s been delayed for a while due to some unforeseen occurrences. But I frankly assure you that it’s for the best, all hands are on deck to never disappoint my ever-loving fans. All I yearn for is more of your prayers and love. I believe with God and your support, the dream will come true.

Would you say acting has impacted your life? If yes, in what way?

I consciously say yes. Acting brings out the action in me just like the slogan of a drink, giving me a life that’s so different from lives, a voice so distinct from voices, a style so unique from styles and a marketable brand that cannot be quantified. Acting really makes me think beyond human comprehension, it makes me realise that there are more to what the eyes or the seer could see and that the interpretation of a ‘life’ is diversified. To me, acting is basically an eye-opener to the darkest and hidden things of the world.

If not acting, what else would you have ventured into?

With my exposure and experience in acting, I have discovered there is no other profession that could beat that which I am in. So, if not acting, I would still have ventured into acting. (Laughs)

Do you also subscribe to the public impression that there is poverty in the industry? If yes, what is the major cause and how can it be reduced to minimal level?

Poverty is a thing of the mind accompanied with principles. Why would Mr A succeed in a profession while Mr. B and Mr. C wouldn’t? Shall we then say the profession is impoverished? There is a manual of success for every life, every career and every ministry if carefully and painfully adhered to. If there is a will, there is a way and wherever there is a way, obstacles abound. You can’t be called gold if you are yet to be tested in furnace. If you fail, check the cause but change not your course. Poverty is the watchword for the lazy and those that can’t stand challenges. To anyone in ‘poverty’, remember that life will not give you what you desire but what you demand. Grab the bull by the horn, there is a potential in you; search it out, write it out, plan it out and live it out. Some are there to pull you down, some to cheat you, some to use you but wise up because you are a total failure the moment you blame someone for your misfortune.

Tips to eradicate or reduce poverty in the industry

Educate – read, watch, hear, learn from the successful. Change/move – take a giant step, prepare to face challenges but if there is none, find one, Plan an alternate step in case things go wrong. Do Good – always be right and helpful because when you pull one down, 10 pull you beneath. Love God and be prayerful. Hope – believe in yourself, believe in your work, take a rest.

Movies are no longer selling, yet most of you actresses are living large, what do you do that your male counterparts don’t?

Who says movies are no longer selling? Movies are still selling but we actors are being cheated. The royalties are meagre compared to the activity, only God has been sustaining us.

On the other hand, should we say we are living large? I don’t think so. We are only trying to level compared to our status.

As I said, if you could aim at the sky, you would reach the tree-top, but if you aim the tree-top, you may never leave the ground. So, be it the male actor or the female actor, if you follow the manual of a successful life, you would be successful among the odds; there is no magic to it.

What is your unique selling point as an actress?

My face.

We learnt you are planning to get married soon to a UK based lover, how true is it?

Chai! There is God o. Anyway, keep your fingers crossed. I will keep you posted with the right information because I will not want to say something now and my fans at the top would take it for something else. (Smiles)

What would you like to see in a man you will like to spend the rest of your life?

Courage coupled with sincerity and the fear of God.

It seems you are not featured in many movies this time around, why?

First, I’ve not been very much around tending to my other businesses. Second, I detest being part of movies that could bring down my reputation, so I return scripts of recalcitrant producers. Not because of pride but a stand for quality.

What is your candid assessment of the industry at the moment?

It can be likened to a moment of mourning which tarries for a night but absolutely assured of joy in the morning. We all know that the industry needs re-awakening. We need a way out for the benefit of us all.

What do you think the government is not doing the right way as far as the industry is concerned?

The government is not responding to our pleas. Piracy is eating up our investments, insurmountable forces facing our independent marketers, film producers are restricted from actualizing their dreams, actors are not well paid yet they suffer from insecurity and health problems amongst others. No individual nor organisation can do it better than the government. We need our government to please, rise for us, re-brand the industry and make Nigeria a better place for us.

What do you think can be done to move the industry forward?

As aforementioned, God is in charge but the government needs to be in control.

Would you say you have recorded a tremendous success in 10 years you have been in the industry?

Sure! Where I am right now is 10 times where I was 10 years ago. All glory to God but I still want to I’m not yet fulfilled. Where I am striving to be in 2016 must be 16 times greater than 2015. This is my plan and with God, all things are possible.

There is a tale of romance between you and MC Oluomo, what is the truth about that?

I keep saying this, it’s not close to the truth. It is nothing but a defamatory allegation. Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, a.k.a. MC Oluomo is a respected brother, a dignified friend and a caring godfather. He appreciates me and I give it to him too. So, how come about the fictitious tale?

If it is a rumour, what could have informed it?

Anyone could have informed or misinformed it but I’m here now to rightly inform you. A rumour is a circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth; and I, as the subject is certainly, I’m clearing the doubtful report that it is a false story.

There is freedom of speech, so anyone can say anything but remember to say what you know much about because freedom after speech may not be guaranteed.
