Should prostitution be legalized? (2)

Prostitution is defined as the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activities with someone for money. Prostitution is a complex issue that has been the subject of intense debates in many countries for many years now. To a large extent, the focus of these debates has been upon the legalization of what they call “the world’s oldest profession”.

Majority of countries in Africa and Asia legally prohibit prostitution. Recently, this issue was raised in the Senate where Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu asked the Senate to consider the possibility of legalising prostitution in the country.

Speaking during debate on a motion on the scourge of human trafficking in the country, Ekweremadu said” Since it has become impossible to stop prostitution in the land, the Senate should consider regulating the act in the country”. According to him “We need to regulate prostitution in this country so that if anyone wants to indulge in prostitution, the person should be registered and issued a license. If we say we want to stop it, it would be difficult. It is done in other countries; let us regulate it by issuing license.”

ENCOMIUM Weekly sampled the opinion of the public on this issue. Asking them if they think prostitution should be legalized and why.

IRABOR MARTINS

Legalizing prostitution makes it more socially acceptable to buy sex, creating a huge demand for prostitutes both by local men and by foreigners engaging in sex tourism. And, as a result, human trafficking and underage prostitution increase drastically in order to satisfy this demand. In other words, prostitution shouldn’t be legalized.

VICTORY OSIGWE

Prostitution should not be legalized because what is bad is bad. These prostitutes keep increasing the level of atrocities in the country and the police hardly do anything about it just because they are prostitutes. Legalising it is as good as saying yes we like the crap they are doing and we want more bastards.

YEMI AWOYEMI

It should not be legalized. Never because it’s against God’s will. It is a taboo. It’s against our norms and culture. It leads to serious health issues that affect individuals, families, friends and the nation at large causing backwardness, unnecessary increase in health status. It causes low self esteem and people lose their values and morals. It may dent the image of a country.

ADESOKAN DAPO

No, it’s an old profession. But if it was supposed to be legalized, it would have been legalized long time ago. Because it morally wrong and most people like to hide when doing such things, it is not advisable that it should be legalized. Even the people patronizing them do not do it publicly, that’s why you see them only at night.

ILESANMI LANRE

All the religions are against it and morally it’s bad. It is the height of irresponsibility if it’s legalized. Even when some people clamour for the legalization it should be discouraged. It cannot be eradicated, but can be reduced to the barest minimum because in the Bible there were prostitutes and they didn’t talk about them in good light.

MARYJANE ADOMA

It will be more expensive. Those patronizing them may not be able to pay and it may lead to increase in rape cases. It should be eradicated if possible.

MATTHEW UJU

It’s a bad thing. Even if we want to eradicate it we won’t succeed. So, it’s better to provide job opportunities so as to reduce it. We shouldn’t support them, that way I think they will reduce. Countries like America, United Kingdom have not been able to eradicate it totally.

  1. Good day,

I was going through google when I stumbled on your site – this url precisely (https://encomium.ng/should-prostitution-be-legalized-2/ ) .

There is a supposed quote by Gabriel Obinna . I know it was gotten from my blog (I believe I can dig out the cached version) Now the quote you attributed to me is not by me. It was from a facebook friend of mine. I am NOT against prostitution in Nigeria. I advocate for the legalization of prostitution in Nigeria.

Kindly remove that quote in your site that was accorded to me or I give you the actual person that said it.

I am really serious with the changes and will check back to see if it has been implemented. That quote goes against ALL what I stand for. Please refer to MY edited version of the article you got the quote from > https://gabrielobinna.com/prostitution-in-nigeria/
